A Change of Plan is the fourth episode of season 23, Misfits and Magic Season 2.

Recap[]

"So, following a fairly disastrous accident in one of the hot springs on an island known to you as Galamanis, but its inhabitants now call Fire Island 2, your comrade in wands, Evan Kelmp, crossed the veil into death. Now, he did get better, kind of. Evan, soon haunted his own once-wayward shadow, traveling with the Pilot Program to find the lair of The Qohlye, more than just a mythical beast, decorating the orrery of your magical means of transport. Your descent into the underworld brought you boons, items and answers, both granted and hard-wrought, and Evan himself was restored to the living, naked but living. One final gift from the winged goat of truth to the endlessly charming Sam Britain: transport here, to the location of your quest."

Synopsis[]

The group finds themselves on a new island, in a lush clearing, between craggy peaks, blurred by rolling fog. The air is crisp and clean, even more so than Suðuroy, unpolluted by Namp things, such as diesel from planes and powerboats. Evan, still naked, now sports a new tattoo on his butt cheek, depicting a cartoon winking goat, although no one notices it yet.

Jammer takes off his own hoodie, offering it to Evan to cover himself. Evan takes it, but hangs the hood on his head, asking the group again what events led to his death, still believing them to have been attacked. K finally admits that they tried to fix his arm, and ended up killing him by accident. Evan asks what they were trying to do, and K says they were trying to fix him, but Evan pushes back, asking what about him needs fixing. They argue, as he had previously stated that his crooked elbow wasn’t a problem for him, and that K doesn’t get to decide what his problems are. While they bicker, Sam and Jammer silently motion to sneak away, but Evan stops them. Sam and Jammer claim that they were just trying to explore the space, but Evan asserts that they stay, as he has something to say: there was a time where his messed up elbow would’ve been the thing K liked most about him. K pauses, and admits in the past they didn’t always see all of him, bewitched by his sadness, and charmed by the fact he was very clingy and affectionate with them. However, after a time, it became too much, that they could only take care of Evan for so long, and tell them that they loved him, before him not believing it began to wear on them. Additionally, his tendency to say things were fine, such as wearing grocery bags as shoes, became deeply concerning. Sam and Jammer try to sneak away again, but K stops them, insisting that they’re needed.

Evan clarifies that K asked to fix his arm, and they talked about it, with him declining their help, and K ignored his wishes. K says their intention was to heal him, since that is their specialty, but that they realized too late that resetting a bone involves breaking, which is Evan’s magic. Once more, Sam and Jammer attempt to leave, and Evan stops them, telling them that this affects all of them, and Jammer tells them that they’re just trying to give them space for the argument. Evan points out that magic is broken, and that they have to “dream small.” Additionally, magic is broken because he published the magical secrets, and thus, trying to do a complicated spell to surgically break a bone is a terrible idea. K accuses Evan of giving up, but Evan argues that he is trying to fix things before he invites any more people into the magical world, and K says it’s possible that more people could help them solve the problem, but Evan insists that no one ever helps. Sam mentions that her parents used to fight like this when her mom wanted to help, but usually the problem was that they didn’t have enough money, which led her into a multi-level marketing scam, which caused them to fight until their eventual divorce. Sam doesn’t want that, and says their problems are fixable. Evan expresses that he is grateful that they brought him back, but makes it clear that he died, and was killed, because K refused to understand how broken magic is right now. He also makes clear that if there are things about him that K doesn’t like, they don’t get to decide for him that they’re problems, and do magic about it without asking him. K denies that it’s about what they don’t like about him, it’s that he won’t take care of himself.

With so much going on, Evan can’t afford to give enough time to process what has happened, especially since he is naked, embarrassed, and although this argument needs to be had, two of his friends are uncomfortable. As this is happening, Evan’s shadow is split behind him, into two, one of them gearing up for a fight, the other trying to shrink away. Evan tells the shadows to get it together, and they snap back into one, as he covers himself with Jammer’s hoodie like an apron around his front. Evan agrees to try not to neglect himself, but cannot promise much else. K looks down, and sees Teddy pull his sweater off, shredding it with his teeth. They ask if he’s okay, and he only shrieks back at them, and K realizes that he is reverting into a normal chipmunk. K tries to encourage him back into sentience, reminding him of his pipe and bicycle, but Teddy doesn’t seem to recognize them. Sam asks T2 to help, asking him to be nice about it. T2 appears from behind the hoopty, and goes to try and comfort Teddy. Jammer asks if they know why Teddy is going feral, and Evan realizes that everyone’s familiars are mirroring their emotional states. He tells K to calm down, but since he is anxious himself, it doesn’t help. The familiars are feeding from their emotions, but the island is doing something to amplify this. Jammer realizes that he’s extremely tired, noting that it’s been about twenty-four hours since they arrived in Copenhagen. Evan suggests that they all take a nap, and he goes to the hoopty, finding his backpack sitting there.

As Evan bends over to check his backpack, Jammer notices his new tattoo, remembering that Evan said he did have a tattoo already, although it resembled a smiley face, not a goat. Evan is disturbed by this, realizing The Qohlye put it on him. K offers him a compact, and he uses the mirror to look at it. K asks if they can look at it a little closer, and Evan consents, and asks if it needs any medical attention. Sam offers K to help with it, and they exchange winks, and K promises Evan they will not use magic on it, and asks for his enthusiastic consent. Evan says that they can have consent, but enthusiasm will have to wait. At this, K tells Jammer to do it instead, and Jammer says although it looks fresh, it’s fully healed. Evan goes into his backpack, dumping it out, and the bodybag that held his body hits the ground, although it doesn’t sound like it contains meat, instead sounding like cracking. Evan opens it, seeing a representation of his body made of terracotta in it, decorated in the configuration of his clothing, and missing an arm. He examines the face of it, and notes that it’s not great for his mental health, and K tells him that their grandfather had something like that made of his body as well. As Evan changes into his spare clothes, Tabby comes back online, and expresses that he is glad that they made it back safely, and with Evan alive. He reports that since they did not cross the storm, he has less energy to help, but that he still wants to. He tells them that he has three things to share: on Galamanis, it was the strength of their intention, and the scope of their goal that made spells successful, which is the central principle of how magic works now. Secondly, they are now on Seegenpelater, represented by a camel with two heads: the magic put upon, and into, the minds of others.

Tabby says that he will rest, and continue watching them. Before he goes back to sleep, Jammer asks what the third thing is, and Tabby replies that it’s that he doesn’t like Jammer. Sam scolds Tabby, and Sam suggests they take a nap, trying to calm Jammer down, who doesn’t take this information well. Evan offers to take the first watch, since he was resting while he was dead. They look around for a place to rest, and Evan draws upon his knowledge from his days without shelter, saying to sleep on a hillside with their heads facing upwards. He advises them to try to find a ridge, as if they are in a ravine, a flash flood would likely kill them. He also notes that since it’s cold, that there won’t be a lot of reptiles or insects that can hurt them. Jammer takes his hoodie back to make a pillow, and K asks Sam to take a walk with them to go relax, and they tell Evan to watch over Jammer. While Jammer lays down, Evan examines the terracotta representation of his head. Jammer starts getting notifications on his phone, and takes a FaceTime call from his teammate Aaron Brooks-Park, putting on a positive face for him. He asks how Punta Cana is, and Aaron says they’re having fun, as it’s the middle of the night and the rest of the team is partying with him. Aaron asks what he’s doing, and Jammer says he’s doing great, and looks over at Evan, who remembers that he has an air mattress, and starts inflating it for him. Aaron asks if he’s talking to Evan, clearly having heard about him before, and asks to meet him over the phone. Jammer brings the phone over, and Evan tries to explain that sleeping on the ground sucks the heat out of his body, but is interrupted by Aaron greeting him.

Evan says hello, and Jammer explains that Evan knows everything you could want to know, and Aaron asks him a simple math problem, which Evan answers quickly, amazing Aaron. Aaron asks advice on playing beer pong, and Evan begins to explain the concept of trajectory, but Aaron throws the ball before he finishes. Aaron’s sister Hester interrupts, asking if Jammer is doing a facial scrub, because he has really good skin. Jammer lies that they’re going to go to a lagoon, and see a fjord tomorrow, acting as if it’s simply a fun vacation. Hester asks what a fjord is, and when Jammer doesn’t know, she asks Evan what it is, who proceeds to explain that it’s “an inland sea.” Hester says that Evan is exactly as Jammer said, and Jammer bids them all goodbye, hangs up, and immediately declares he needs to go to bed. He takes the air mattress in whatever state it’s in, and gets on it. Evan returns to the hoopty, keeping watch.

Elsewhere, K thanks Sam for saving Evan, noting how good she is “at people.” Sam asks K how they are, and they have trouble putting it into words. K talks about how Evan says to dream small, but that they think Sam has what it takes to be the face of magic, and could inspire people. Sam denies that anyone else sees her that way, and says K is nice, and loves her, and that she has been really worried about K, and that she is once more offering that they can come live with her. K appreciates the offer, but says that they would only jeopardize what Sam has been working for. K notes that Tabby said that it’s about intention and purpose, but Sam counters that he doesn’t like Jammer, so she doesn’t trust his judgment, and they agree that he seems to know facts, but not people, which is where Sam comes in.

Meanwhile, T2 tries to keep Teddy in line, has him in his teeth, Teddy foaming at the mouth, who reaches up and cuts T2 on the face. K insists that there’s something to the islands, and Sam steers the conversation back to using their strengths to support each other, and that it seems like K has been trying to handle a lot of this on their own in their van, but that they could instead do this together. She brings up that K told Evan that he should pay attention to how his friends feel about him, and Sam feels that way about K. K shouts that they’ve been on edge, and that there’s nothing wrong with “The Dragon Wagon,” and Sam feels a spike of anxiety, not liking the conflict, but still wants to fix it. They two notice that T2 spits out Teddy and walks off. K tries to talk to Teddy, but he is still feral, digging his claws into the ground, and Sam offers to help Teddy dig, and scolds him, which seems to calm him somewhat, and sits down. K tries to sing with him, but he doesn’t reply, and they realize that they aren’t there emotionally, either. K admits to Sam since they were one of the ones that broke magic, they thought that they should fix it on their own. They offer to drive their van over to Sam’s place, and Sam agrees, saying they can park it wherever they like, and will give K their own bathroom that they can use at any time, offering food as well. While this happens, Teddy curls up and goes to sleep.

While Jammer is sleeping, Evan steals his phone, texting Aaron that he had erroneously defined a fjord, as he meant to say “an inlet of a sea.” Aaron starts a FaceTime call, and Evan sprints away from the sleeping Jammer to answer the call, and Aaron explains that he doesn’t understand what Evan’s saying, and Evan continues to define a fjord. Aaron asks if they’re at a spa right now, and Evan expresses confusion, since they’re out saving magic, and asks Aaron how he thought Jammer knew him. Aaron answers that Jammer said they went to school together, and he goes into a bathroom to get to a quieter place, and asks what “Whitney” is doing. Evan expresses confusion that anyone calls Jammer by his first name, and wonders if Aaron thinks they’re not close enough to be referring to him by his last name. Aaron says that Jammer talks about him “all the time,” causing Evan to tear up. Aaron asks what they’re actually doing, and why Evan has Jammer’s phone. Evan says that it’s because he doesn’t have Aaron’s number, and didn’t want to text him from a random number, because then he might not get the information about what fjords were. Aaron tells Evan that he’s very drunk, but Evan says he didn’t know that, and he and Jammer are on an island in a magic storm. Aaron asks if Evan can do magic, since Jammer had been unable to, and Evan pulls out his broom and starts flying up, much to Aaron’s delight. However, Evan notes that while he can do magic, neither he, nor anyone else, can do it well right now, hence why they are saving magic. He then remembers that he’s invading Jammer’s privacy, but he needed to tell Aaron about the fjords. Aaron asks why, and Evan says he doesn’t know, it’s just something he does, and that he saw a terracotta corpse of himself, and came from a piss glacier where a goat tattooed on his ass while he was dead. Aaron is confused by his energy, and Evan says that he will call him back in the morning when he is sober, to make sure the information about the fjords has stuck.

At the end of his tirade, Evan asks if Jammer really talks about him all of the time, and Aaron confirms this, although he’s getting airsick from Evan flying, and hangs up before he vomits. On the ground, K and Sam hear Evan in the air. Still in the air, Evan notices the ruins of an old castle a distance away, with people moving in and out of it. He reports this to the group, saying they should nap soon, as he knows where they’re headed next. Jammer, laying on the air mattress, awake now due to people talking, hoping that people will sleep as well. K puts a sleeping Teddy back into their backpack. Sam considers casting a spell to summon up some coffee, but realizes that creating a full cup would be fairly complex. Remembering what Tabby said about intention, she tries to focus by chanting about the components of coffee, but Tabby’s other half awakens and says “Doubtful.” Jammer wakes up, confused by what is going on, and Tabby’s rock shows a symbol, followed by Jammer’s name with a slash through it. Evan suggests they go to sleep, because the spell Sam is attempting to cast is more aligned with Galamanis, creation magic, but this is the island of the mind, and Tabby’s other half reads, “Likely.” K puts it together, and asks if they can have the effects of caffeine, but without coffee, and Tabby once more displays, “Likely.”

Jammer asks if they’re really going to point wands at their brains, since the last time they pointed wands at each other “didn’t go well.” Evan suggests they all take care of themselves, and that mind magic will be easier to do here. Jammer casts a spell to cause the effects of drinking a large energy drink, and when he succeeds, he tastes the aftertaste of it in his mouth, and feels his heartrate increase. He tells the group that it’ll work, and that they just have to picture it. He proceeds to start deflating the air mattress, suddenly bursting with energy.

Unaware of what spell Jammer cast, Evan casts a spell to release the hormones to make him think that he’s had a full night’s sleep, to great effect. Mimicking Jammer’s energy, Spalding bounces around the hoopty, and Jammer starts running laps. Sam sees this, and thinks about how people at parties she attends do cocaine, and decides that’s the effect she’d like to go for, casting a spell to get the effects, but not the part that makes people selfish. When it doesn’t work at first, K advises Sam to start scrubbing her wand on her gums to mimic part of the ritual of doing cocaine, which helps kick the spell off, and Sam’s intention drifts to Cocaine Bear. Sam shrieks, euphoric, energetic, and speaking quickly. K casts a spell to be awake, focusing on the feeling of a full night’s sleep, which they note they haven’t done in years, possibly since they left Gowpenny. With all of them settled on energy, Sam suggests they go to the castle Evan saw, and meet those living there. Jammer notices that he’s missing his phone, but assumes that he dropped it, and Evan produces it. Jammer notices that K did their spell without a wand, which they are all amazed by. Sam continues to feel the side effects of the magical cocaine, and Evan notes that he’s never done it, but has unknowingly transported it, and Sam tells him that she’d like to talk about that after they’ve gone to the castle.

The Castle[]

Arriving at the castle, the four notice that it’s semi-rundown, and there are about seven to ten people moving around, carrying food and other things. Before they talk to anyone, they notice that Boudicca Philtrum is standing in the doorway, and Sam says hello, still speaking quickly and copiously, and stating that they have a message for her. Philtrum expresses surprise and displeasure at seeing them again, but welcomes them in. They follow after her, noting that the castle is rather nice on the inside, and has been magically altered to be larger on the inside than it appears from the outside. T2 walks alongside them, and is welcomed by the other inhabitants, despite not knowing who he or the pilot program are. K checks in with Teddy telepathically, and while he doesn’t respond, they hear him rustling around in a way that reminds them of when he makes himself a cup of tea. Evan addresses Boudicca, who expresses distaste for him calling her by her first name, and he presses on, explaining their mission from Dr. Boodle to her, involving offering her a magical item, and suggests they go to the hoopty. Philtrum agrees, although is obviously annoyed, and Jammer comments that he hates her, and she confirms that it’s mutual, that they got her fired, but that she tried to kill them, and that they broke magic, and ruined the world for all wizards, so she believes they’re all even. K, deciding to take a little revenge, tells a still-hyper Sam to explain to Philtrum what they’ve been up to this entire time, and she agrees, calling her “Boudy-boots,” and wrapping Philtrum’s arm around her. Sam begins explaining her entire talk show, and in a frenzy, casts a spell to add onto her charm. Despite the entire situation, upon noticing Sam’s wand, Philtrum seems pacified, even inviting her to keep talking, and making small talk.

Phitrum then asks Sam if she wants to “fix” magic, and Sam replies that it seems to be their mission, and that Boodle wants to figure out how magic works now. Philtrum points out that his mission is to understand the magic as it stands, but that is not “fixing” it. Sam says that as long as everyone has access to magic, that means magic is fixed. In her explanation, she offhandedly mentions “sex magic,” and Jammer expresses interest in it, and Philtrum reveals that it was an elective at Gowpenny, taught by Professor Viniscus, and Evan begins making jokes about it, and Philtrum chastises him to not “speak ill of the dead.” Evan notes that Viniscus’ death is unusual, since she was an enchanted cauldron, and magical objects seemed to survive the change in magic better than casters. K agrees, pointing out their brooms and wands, although that they no longer have one, which is of interest to Philtrum, who confirms that the other three still have wands. The group begin to head back to the hoopty, and take notice that there are other people nearby watching them. In particular, Sam is able to identify someone that looks very much like Lemli Irving, and calls out to her. Lemli peeks around the tree she’s been hiding behind, and comes up to greet them. Sam invites her on their quest to save magic, but Evan is skeptical, as Lemli is acting nervous and hiding from them, and he slides his shadow under her. He notices that she and Philtrum seem to be friends, and that Lemli is deeply uncomfortable with her situation, and her gaze cannot leave their magical items, taking note of each one, her stare filled with the blue magic of this place, looking hungry.

Taking note of all of that, Evan strikes up a conversation with Lemli, asking her if she’s interested in magical artifacts. Lemli mentions that on this island, they have been trying to find magical items, and that they have use for them, but doesn’t elaborate. Evan then presses, stating he noticed her looking at their magical gear. She apologizes, saying it had been a while since she’d seen anyone still in possession of a wand, and Evan asks if it’s a habit for people to break them. Lemli explains that if you break an item that was enchanted before the change in magic, you can access the magical potential within it, and that it’s been the most consistent way to cast magic the way things had been before. Jammer notes that Fergus was able to do magic on Galamanis, but Lemli differs, as the magic of Galamanis is “a big burst of something,” whereas the magic they’d been able to do before the change was more sophisticated, and brings up that she has two joys in the world: making potions, and drowning men in the ocean. She laments that she hasn’t been able to do either of those things in a very long time, but that breaking magical items allows her to feel some sense of normality. Noticing that she’s been talking about rather dismal subjects, she apologizes for making the group uncomfortable. Evan steps in, saying that discomfort is a good place to be, since Lemli and Philtrum must’ve had a conversation before they got there, and that Lemli was following them, trying to stay out of sight, and might’ve continued to do so, had Sam not noticed her. He posits that there are non-malevolent reasons for that, and perhaps she feels threatened by them, but that there have already been breaches of trust that have occurred in the short time that they’ve been on this island.

Evan presses on that they should go to the hoopty, but asks Philtrum if there is anyone else following them. Philtrum confirms that other people are following them, and they are doing so ostensibly because there have been other visitors to the island that are not as benevolent as them. She says that if the Misfits don’t prove to be a threat, then the others will continue to keep their distance. Evan points out that if they had come to raid them, they wouldn’t have come with magical items that they are all desperate for, and tells her to dismiss the others they cannot see, and they will have Lemli and Philtrum come with them. They argue with Philtrum over her nickname, with Jammer landing on “B-Squared,” and that he will call her by her first name, however she wants that to be, because she no longer has power over him. Jammer dismisses the group following them, and they see a few people appear, and they recognize Coggle Undergus and Axelby Killoran. They invite The Oggles to come with them, but it’s quickly apparent that it’s only Coggle. They come over and say hi, and they affirm that they’ve missed each other, and Coggle asks if the Misfits are there to kill them all. They say no, and that they don’t kill people, but Evan points out that K killed him earlier that day, which interests Lemli. They all head to the hoopty, and they try to explain some of what’s happened on the journey. Evan notices that Lemli is nervous, but she agrees that she’ll come with them, along with Coggle.

The Hoopty[]

Evan explains what Tabby is, and that Dr. Boodle wanted to give him to Philtrum as a way to indicate that there is value in trying to understand magic as it stands. Tabby turns on briefly, saying, “Ask Later.” Philtrum begins to inspect the hoopty, looking at the orrery, trying to scratch the wood, which Evan stops her physically from doing, and tells her that the hoopty is not for her, just the tablets. She points out that they want her help, and Evan corrects her to specify that Dr. Boodle wants her help, because Evan has no faith that she will do “the right thing.” She asks what that is, and Evan says he doesn’t know, as it’s whatever Dr. Boodle wants. Philtrum then says that the tablets can be broken down to “fuel our magic for a week.” The group denies this as an option, and Philtrum argues that they are already hers. The group argue, and she says she doesn’t really care about the world as a whole, she only wants to rebuild what has been lost. K counters that whatever was lost, was clearly unstable, if it could be broken so easily, but while they speak, the group hears a snap as Philtrum breaks part of the hoopty, casting a spell to throw them backward. K tries to cast a protective spell, but fails, as magic is still difficult.

In that moment, Evan snaps his wand and uses the magical potential to kill Philtrum, leaning into the magic of the mind to shut her brain off, throwing his shadow over her. Casting the spell, he feels his magical potential crest, watching as the light leaves her eyes. As his shadow rolls over to Philtrum, it crosses over Tabby, who begins to look into him and assess him, causing Evan to pull his shadow away quickly, but feels as Tabby begins to understand more about magic, something to do with the material, and Evan himself. Lemli and Coggle, who were out of sight, come running over. Coggle looks around, trying to put together what happened. Evan explains that Philtrum attacked K, and now she’s dead. Lemli goes over to K, laying on the ground, asking if they’re okay. K answers that they believe one of their ribs is broken, and tells Lemli that she has to lie to the group and say that they’re okay. Lemli offers to dab the blood on the side of K’s mouth, and affirms what they’re supposed to tell the group, but Jammer walks in, asking if they’re okay, but Lemli panics and says K has a broken rib. Jammer uses his knowledge of sports medicine to check on them, and K asks if Evan is okay, and says Evan is fine. They head back to the hoopty, finding Evan removing the terracotta version of himself from his body bag, replacing it with Philtrum. Sam suggests they go to the iceberg to get her back, and Evan declines to do so, saying she should’ve been dead the whole time. Jammer finds a branch from a tree, applying it as a splint to K’s ribs, and Coggle offers a scrap of their sweater to help.

K apologizes for making Evan kill Philtrum, and Evan counters that Boodle never should’ve put them in this position in the first place, as Philtrum was never going to help them, as she was terrible her entire life, which was still something he would’ve worked with, until she hurt K. Evan asks if everyone is okay with what they just saw, and Sam begins to freak out, the magical cocaine in her system causing her to panic. Lemli asks if the group will kill her if she tries to do magic to help them, and K puts on their new magical pince-nez, trying to ascertain what happened to her, and if there is anything they can do. They begin to see a bunch of information, reading that Lemli had graduated from Gowpenny, continued dating Axelby, but that they and their friends had no desire to integrate with the Namp world. The group had never been the most resilient of people, and they couldn’t figure out how to live with the new magic, and started to break things to maintain a sense of normalcy. K looks deeper, outside of the encampment, a trash heap of broken magical items, anything that could be scavenged, including the knowledge that they hadn’t seen anyone’s familiars. Looking even farther, K sees that Lemli found out that wizard bones are also considered “magical items,” and has “made herself 206 magic items to break, twice.” K realizes that the magic of this place is Convince, which convinces the residents that everything is fine, and they put away how they actually think and feel. Their familiars freaking out earlier was a result of the disconnect between how they actually feel and the magic of the island, but since none of the residents have them, they are unable to gauge it. K tells Lemli not to do magic, and asks if she knows about chemistry, as it’s the Namp version of potions. Lemli interrupts them, telling them that she’s burned too much to leave. K tells her that she can always start anew, and tells Sam there’s Gatorade in the hoopty.

Sam leaves, sweating profusely and shouting in a panic. Lemli expresses concern for Sam, and Evan explains that Sam did magical cocaine. Lemli tells Evan that she won’t tell anyone that he killed Philtrum, and he says he doesn’t care if she does, and offers to help her if she wants. She thanks him, and says she’s not fazed by the killing, since that’s a thing they have in common, which K mentions they also drowned a man earlier. Lemli agrees that she would love to drown men with K, and tells the group she’s going to leave, because they have a lot of magic on them, and it’s too tempting for her. She says that if they manage to figure out magic, to come back for them. K offers Lemli a phone, and Lemli doesn’t know how to use it, but says she’ll ask Axelby. Evan asks Jammer if he’ll be telling his friends that Evan killed somebody, and Jammer says no.

At the hoopty, Sam clutches the Gatorade, ranting to herself that she’s the only person who’s never killed someone. Coggle approaches her, saying they’ve never killed anyone either. They chat for a bit, and Coggle says they should leave now. Sam asks them not to tell anyone that Evan killed anyone, as she doesn’t want people to be more afraid of him. Coggle asks if Sam is okay, and Sam says yes. Coggle alludes to when their brother was “still around” and that it was nice to be able to trust someone with all of their feelings. They note that Sam is good at making people feel good, even in a situation like this, but that Philtrum was evil, and that she has really good friends, and that they won’t be around forever. Sam thanks them, but Coggle says they really need to leave, as there are other people on the island besides them, who would most certainly try to kill them and take all of their stuff. Sam calls over to the others, telling them they need to leave. Evan notes that K is still injured, but that he doesn’t know how to do magic to fix it, and K says they can find somewhere that does.

Going back to the hoopty, Evan finds a wrench in the glove compartment, and uses his built up magical potential to enchant it. He internalizes the idea that he is the dark wizard that everyone said he was going to be, having killed the world’s old mentor wizard, and in a moment of wanting to fix something, imbues the wrench with the power to fix things. Jammer takes a moment in his feelings, realizing all of this is why he left the magical world, and feels the magic of the island trying to dig into his mind, but with a nudge from Spalding, resists it.
