"Ah, last we left our brave adventurers off, they were deep in a cistern covered in grime and mold and muck, fighting against the Rat King himself! Being victorious over the Rat King, now holding the Crown of the Rat King, you guys liberated Em, the angel of the waters. The statue of Bethesda Fountain who cleaned you guys off, healed you. Incredible bit of dream magic from Pete, waking Em up. Uh, and she flew off back to Bethesda Fountain. You guys are in your nice wedding duds. Drenched, but sweet-smelling, with a little bit of help from Em, purifying you guys of all the filth and shit and piss."
Synopsis[]
Having defeated the Rat King, the party returns with Em to Bethesda Fountain, which they find cracked in half. Em is devastated, and flies away to Washington Square Park to look for a way to get back in touch with the waters. The rest of the party return to the wedding, where they meet Don Confetti again, as well as Angela Confetti and Ronald Pigeon.
Pete encounters Robert Moses at a table with a group of people who are looking to buy cocaine, and is worried about a young girl who looks like she's been crying. Pete investigates, and finds from detecting the girl's thoughts that the other people at the table are vampires. Robert also lets him know that he knows what happened with his father. Everyone meets back up on the dance floor and Pete fills them in on what happened. Kugrash recognizes Robert as a very powerful and dangerous figure in the financial sector, and notices that he looks the same as he did in the 80's, but Robert does not recognize Kugrash as a rat.
Everyone returns to Kingston's apartment and they make a big ass salad. They discuss briefly what happened at the wedding, and Kugrash reveals to everyone that he wasn't always a rat, but used to be a human investment banker named Bruce Kugrich. Ricky receives a text from Esther requesting that they come to the Clinton Hill Chantry. When they reach the chantry, Alejandro explains what he has found out about the grey baby, who is Nod, the monarch of the Sixth Borough. He asks Pete to sleep in the chantry so he and Esther can keep a watch on him while he sleeps, and they ask Kingston to talk to Willy to find out what he knows.
Pete and Ricky stay in the Clinton Hill Chantry, and Pete goes to sleep with Alejandro watching over him. Ricky and Esther look at some of the books in the chantry, she explains the imperial axiom, or Sinatra's law, and shows him the map of the highway hex.
Kingston makes his way to Williamsburg at 1AM, and meets with Willy the golem. Willy suggests that the 'Lazarus' that Nod keeps mentioning may be Emma Lazarus, one of the previous Vox Phantasma, who wrote the poem inscribed inside the Statue of Liberty.
Sofia heads back to Staten Island to look for Mario, but runs straight into Isabella Infierno, carrying a bag from David's Bridal. Abandoning her plans for the evening, Sofie heads to a bar and texts Dale, "I saw Isabella today, I wish you the best".
In Misty's apartment, she finds a standing mirror covered with a piece of silk. As soon as she uncovers it, Titania, the queen of the faeries, appears on the other side. Titania attacks and tries to rip the shoes off Misty's feet, but Misty covers the mirror again, breaking a hip in the altercation. Misty calls Kingston for help, and Kingston ends up spending the night there.
Kugrash returns to the Subway tunnels to a little basket of cheese and a note from Wally. He goes to Wally's house, watches him Facetime with David, and then when leaves the empty cheese basket with a note that says, "Rat Jesus loves you".
In Pete's dream, he is selling drugs to a bunch of hipsters. They ask him for something to 'help them get out', and when he sells them mushrooms they start turning into giant bugs. A rip in the dream realm opens and the bugs head out into the real New York City. Pete runs to find Alejandro who is furious that he would be so careless, and uses Clairvoyance to find where the bugs are attacking. Pete sends out a call to the rest of the party and they converge on the Steinway subway stop.
