Description[]
A giant, 20-foot memorial statue of her stands at the west side of the chapel in Castle Candy. The statue is made of a deep, dark purplish-blue statue veined through with a lighter blue, and she is depicted as a royal looking woman dressed in long, wizardly robes. She wears a royal circlet on her brow and is holding a book open in her hands. She was the previous owner of the Sour Scratch.
Lazuli was always incredibly busy with her arcane research. She had many irons in the fire and kettles on the stove and was often very absentminded and distracted when it came to other matters. She was very close with her sisters, even Citrina, who was a cleric for the Bulbian Church, which believes arcane magic to be akin to witchcraft. They were thick as thieves.
Background[]
During her time working as an Archmage, she began the Order of the Spinning Star, a order of monks dedicated to protecting the secrets of Candian magic. One such monk was a cousin of hers, Cumulous Rocks. Even though they could have helped in the conflict of the Ravening War, Lazuli was adamant that the Order had more important matters to attend to. She maintained that while the war would preserve their kingdom, the Order was preserving Candia itself. Sometime after the Order's creation, Lazuli's sister, Citrina, came upon an unsettling discovery at the Monastery. Sir Theobald Gumbar witnessed an argument about what Citrina found.
She did a lot of research during her life and discovered arcane secrets—ways to be more powerful and live forever—that would have dramatically furthered their world, had she still been alive. As a new knight, Sir Theobald Gumbar studied under her as a ward, where she taught him magic, such as the spell Find Familiar. Archmage Lazuli also helped concoct the cola that her brother Amethar uses to activate his rages.
Before the Ravening War, Lazuli was deeply in love with the Duchess of Merengue, Caramelinda. The two were married until her death, when Caramelinda married Lazuli's brother, Amethar, as the marriage was still politically beneficial.
Archmage Lazuli fought during and lost her life in the Ravening War, and was the first of her sisters to die. As Count Jacques Tomaté attempted straddle his positions as a Fructeran noble and the Vegetanian heir and spread his influence too thin, Fructera's leadership began to crumble. Lazuli, in the wake of the death of her mother, Queen Pamelia Rocks, used her magic to find another ally in Fructera to overthrow him. She found it in a young Gustavo Uvano, and sacrificed herself in battle in order to secure his position as ruler.
The day she died, she called down a downpour of arcane arrows and took out battalions of enemy forces, saving the lives of everyone in Candia's armies. When she dismissed Theobald just before doing so, she told him that this needed to be done to save their people and the world. Theobald believes she had some power to see the future and saw the coming of Princess Ruby Rocks and her arcane powers.
History[]
Ambush on the Sucrosi Road[]
Lazuli appears to Princess Ruby Rocks as she falls unconscious atop their carriage when the party is ambushed by Cheese Marauders. She mentions Ruby's arcane abilities, comments on how her brother has made a nice family for himself, and tells her to take care of her bow.
Keep Sharp[]
In the carriage after the battle, Lord Calroy Cruller explains to Princess Ruby Rocks, who was just about to use another spell, that the members of the castle had been trained to speak a certain way about Lazuli whenever they were outside Candia. They say that "Archmage" is just a title given as an anachronism, an ancient holdover, and that Lazuli was a proficient alchemist, no more magical than your common potions shop owner.
