Description[]
Ava is a grizzled white stoat, with a hunched-over back. She has one beady black eye and one that is milky white with a scar running through it. She is an exceptionally old stoat, having seen five winters. Ava is wiry and lanky, and walks around with a cane made out of a racoon baculum (penis bone).
Background[]
Ava was married to Kenji and is the mother of Tula and Viola. She is devoted to her family and focused on their well being. She is eager for her family to stay together and chastises Viola for not visiting and Tula for taking on too much responsibility. Many of the other stoats are a little fearful of her as she is very assertive. Thorn mentions nothing scaring him more than Ava. Though he may have been teasing his wife to make her laugh.
Ava has lost litters in the past and has experienced events similar to the events in the Red Warren. She has made a home in the burrow and is proud of it. One gruelling winter, her and Kenji lost several children and were supported by other families.
Ava was left alone after Kenji was killed by a human in a truck, which she called a "not-bear", as it moved without lifting it's legs (later realised to be wheels).
History[]
Relationships[]
Tula[]
Ava loves Tula and is proud of her, but because of their different world views they have trouble connecting. Tula feels as though Ava's desire for control and refusal to accept that sometimes things are just bad has made it difficult for them to experience negative emotions. She also feels disrespected by Ava. However, Ava is able to grow and they become closer than ever.
Viola[]
Ava is initially concerned by Viola's decision to leave the Red Warren and join the Lukura. She comes off as standoffish, but mostly misses her daughter and is worried about her. They reconnect with each other after the destruction of the Red Warren. Viola becomes pregnant, and Ava tries to advise her, having experienced being pregnant during a difficult time.
Thorn[]
Thorn is initially terrified of Ava. Ava recognizes that Thorn has been through a lot, but doesn't like that her daughter left the Warren to be with him. Ava grows to respect Thorn as he helps them flee the decaying Warren, and comes to view him as a son during their struggles at the Last Bast.
Trivia[]
- "Ava" is the Latin word for grandmother.
