Description[]
Barsimmeon Higgs makes Usha Rao look young. He is balding, but has a crown of hair that joins his eyebrows. He looks like he owns dozens of birds.
Background[]
Barsimmeon has accumulated a $1,200 debt at Dave's Video World from renting a cassette of Never Stop Blowing Up over and over again. When he goes into the game he inhabits Damian Bane, a Nordic action hero. He loves going in and having adventures. He's spent lifetimes as Damian Bane and always returns ninety four minutes later into his real life.
On Barsimmeon's third or fourth time in the tape he brought a friend from his building named Walter. Walter ended up dying as his avatar and when Barsimmeon left the movie, Walter's dead body was forcibly ejected through the VCR. Barsimmeon drove to Portland and dumped Walter's body in the swamp.
History[]
Be Kind, Rewind[]
At Dave Balt's direction, Wendell Morris calls Barsimmeon to inform him of his late fees. Barsimmeon is shocked and alarmed to learn Dave's Video World will be closing next week, remarking it is "time to pay the piper." Barsimmeon mentions that he knows Wendell's father Charles from Charles' past BMX career, and references his "three fine sons," notably excluding Wendell himself. When Wendell insists that Barsimmeon bring his overdue VHS and late fees to the store before 4 p.m., Barsimmeon ominously promises he will have both. "The ending of an era is upon us," he says, "but in each ending is a new beginning concealed."
When Barsimmeon arrives at Dave's Video World, he quickly begins flirting with a smitten Usha, to Paula Donvalson's disgust. He gives Usha a banker's note from an unknown government to settle his late fees, which he says is "as old as time."
Barsimmeon explains that he has rented "Never Stop Blowing Up" more times than he can count, and he never tires of it, no matter how many times he watches. But if Dave's Video World closes, he will no longer be able to rent the VHS. When Liv Skyler suggests streaming the movie instead, Barsimmeon addresses her by name, revealing that he knows "everyone's name who works at [his] favorite video rental store." He then inserts the tape into a store VCR, freezing everyone in bright light and transporting them into the world of "Never Stop Blowing Up."
After arriving in the video world in the body of Jennifer Drips, Russell Feeld sees Barsimmeon as Damian Bane standing in a pool of blood after killing numerous Sinclair Group mercenaries at the Mercury Facility for War Chemicals. Winking, he advises "Ms. Drips" to "never stop blowing up" before demolishing a wall and making his escape via a helicopter.
Quotations[]
- "Ah, in all of literature and fine arts, works of culture, artifacts of our species' understanding of life, the nature of the cosmos... The telling of stories is our greatest achievement."
