Borough of Dreams is the ninth episode of season 3, The Unsleeping City.

"Last we left our intrepid heroes off, they had miraculously fought the ghosts of New York's Crooked Cops, commanded by the onyx badge of Epona Cirillo, sensed hastily by rats, and summoned the train to Dream, making the L Train run on time for once. As the train to Nod pulled into the station, the heartbreak of Pete's knowledge that words had been said about possibly having to deal with Pete through means of violence had left the party shaken, trust damaged. However, arriving at Nod, apologies and amendments were offered not only by Kingston Brown, but also by Nod, the Monarch of Dreams, who also said an apology and an explanation was owed. The shimmering star-filled skies of the Sixth Borough, snow rising from the streets, into the celestial heights, all of you exit the L-Train. Purple, sparkling with gold, the unicorn skitters off into Nod."
Synopsis[]
The orphan Nod, levitates towards the diner in a very creepy way. Misty and Sofia talk about ex-marriages. Wally exits the train, having joined the wrong train on his first day as conductor. Kugrash tells him he's his dad, he interprets this to mean that he's part rat, but Kugrash explains that he used to be human until he was turned. He admits that he was a bad person and that he never fled the country but mostly because he was turned into a rat and that he's been living in the magical part of New York. Wally hugs him. Kugrash introduces the group to Wally. Nod objects to the term grey baby. Where Kingston walks, the ankle deep mist recedes to reveal mundane sidewalk out of respect for his position. Kingston is unable to see many of the dream effects as a result.
Misty flies off to the Moon with Ricky and Sofia holding on to her. Pete gives Kingston a "sober" salad he has with him, but Kingston is freaked out when the tomatoes start to talk to him. They are walking along the bed of the east river. Most of them walking through the water, but it parts around Kingston. They enter Poseidon's Diner, which is staffed by mermaids and is full of mythical creatures. Ricky has a conversation with a mint called Ronaldo Manticaster.
Alejandro describes the magical items from the bodega for them:
- Sofia's grill of persuasion that affects the hearts of those you speak to
- Kingston's holy grail detergent that repairs souls as well as cleaning clothes
- 1000 hour energy that means he wouldn't have to rest for 42 days.
- Bagel of all things whose toppings can be used to tell the future, eating it would disperse his consciousness.
Nod is leaning against Pete and give him a bunch of pills. He welcomes them to the dream realm he says that Dark forces are moving against NYC, both the living and dream realm and the Grey Orphan. Pete was chosen without prior consultation because he would have ignored the discussion as a dream. Robert is moving against NYC, he created the highway hex, in his quest for wealth and power he sold his soul to both Hell and Fairy. It was never collected a the end of his natural life for fear of angering the other. Bringing things from the dreamworld to the real world they lose the possibilities of that they could be and are limited to whatever they are at that time. Some dreams are paragons powerful enough that they would damage the cosmos if they were brought into the waking world. He thinks Robert Moses might be trying to bring "the American Dream" into the waking world. The previous paragons were The Pearly Gates, the Mouth of Hell, and the Road to Fairy. Taking the "Golden Door" to the waking world would fix the meaning of the American Dream. Nod was targeted because he'd kept Robert out of the Land of Dreams, as someone undead, he can't dream normally and would have to arrive physically. Kugrash casts dispel magic on Wally to make sure he isn't secretly Robert. Emma Lazarus's poem about the Golden Door has meant that it's already partially in the waking world. He says the door was locked, but when he finds out that the Key to the City was stolen he removes the lock from the door. He says that the minions of hell and fairy can't enter New York because of the highways.
Misty admits that she stole Titania's shoes when she left fairy and that Titania might not be happy with her. Nod points out that there are neighbourhoods near the old locations of the positions of the Gates of Hell, Fairy and the Pearly Gates that have some denizens who might know what's happening in their realms. Sofia uses a via gift card her husband gave her to pay. Sofia asks if it's possible to spy on someone's dreams.
They decide to split up:
- Alejandro and Sofia to heaven,
- Ricky and Kugrash to hell,
- and Misty and Kingston to Fairy
- Pete to the Metropolitan museum of memory
Hell's Kitchen is on fire, guarded by daemons. Kugrash encounters one of his former business partners in the form of a rat. Ricky's axe starts talking to him to tell him he's in a wicked place. The spell to turn Kugrash into a rat was just changing him to match his soul. If he had been a better person it would have failed. They go to the Statue of Liberty who is pointing to the golden door with her torch. She illuminates a sickly web over the city representing a dream of money and greed. Kugrash casts cure wounds and it has an effect on some of the web over the door. This gives off the small of burning money and undeath reminiscent of the damage to Bethesda Fountain. They think it might be the vampires.
The Pearly gates are near JFK airport. Alejandro and Sofia see souls departing. They see a commotion and Dale beating his way through angels to reach Sofia. He reveals that he has been dead for a long time, ever since Isabella killed him and that he never cheated on her. He says "when you get to the top, I know what it will feel like, but there is someone there" before he is dragged away from her by angels. They are very sympathetic to her when she tries to knock them back. She resolves to kill Isabella.
Near Carnegie Hall, Misty casts herself a very unconvincing disguise. She orders a mana-hattan for each of them and they get drunk. They are approached by a guy at the bar who is new to town he is Robin Goodfella also known as Puck and Misty sees through his disguise just as he sees through hers. He says that Titania is mad at her and that he only sent her the mirror under orders. He says that Titania is hurt and that something bad might happen to the mortal realm. A whole bar full of fairies are looking at them.
Nod and Pete walk into the museum. It has all the memories of the previous Vox Phantasma. Pete is absorbing the memories. Nod gives Pete the option to either restrain the wildness or to have more influence over them. He chooses to embrace it. He hears Roberts voice and is partially in his mind. He encounters the exhibits for his fellow party members. He chooses to look through Kingston's life as he has limited time.
The whole party converge on the train and Wally gets it started. Pete and Kingston hug.
Sofia meets up with Mario and he reveals that Isabella is a literal succubus. Dale got too close to their money laundering operation for the Confetti's and was killed. Dale was part of the Monastery before he was killed. Sofia promises revenge.
At the art exhibition Ricky isn't happy with the lack of adherence to the fire codes. Peter is the centrepiece of Priya's exhibition. He rips into her for being derivative and says that if she was going to screw with him publicly, she should at least be original. Kingston's support cures him of his broken heart. When they have split up in different parts of the venue, Ricky smells smoke. Isabella sees Sofia on the roof, and they swiftly get into a fight.
