A Crown of Candy

Description[]

Candia was previously the smallest nation in Calorum. After the siege on Castle Candy in 1215, Liam Wilhelmina of House Jawbreaker consumed a Heart Seed imbued with the power of the Spirit of Change and wished for Candia to grow four times its size.

The land is rooted in magic, scholarship, and wonder. Citizens of Candia, Candians, have an innate magic to them and a lot of arcane power. Even though they're small, they are very tough and potent. Their native language is Candian.

Candia is a vast realm of sweet things and peppermint forests, vast plains of bright pink, fuchsia, and purple grasses, and rolling hills of chocolate chip cookie fields. The peaks of the Great Stone Candy Mountains rise high in the distance to the north, and swirling snowstorms of ice cream peal over the horizon. Tall trees grow in ancient lolly orchards, and sugar cube farmers and serfs toil in the fields. There are spiring towers of sweet frosting and hard rock candy of fortresses and battlements of ancient empires. It smells sweet there, sweeter than Fructera, and is crisp and bright, magical and strange. At feasts, they drink classic, lemon and cherry flavored cola along with hot chocolate in striped candy drinking horns.

The architecture of the land is Bavarian in design, with big, tall, alpine-looking cottages, and it's citizens speak with a mix of American and British accents.

Government and Religion[]

Candia is a monarchy, currently ruled by Queen Saccharina of House Frostwhip. She inherited the throne from her father, King Amethar of House Rocks, who now serves as Concordant Emperor. Other noble Houses include House Jawbreaker and House Cruller.

During the Ravening War, they were incredibly powerful due to the brilliance of their military leaders and their innate connection with magic.

Before the creation of the new Concord, Candia was a part of the Bulbian Church, though some citizens would still practice the old ways and partake non-Bulbian magic. This kind of magic was more tolerated in Candia as it was a deeper part of their culture, and the Bulbian Church was less present there. Outside of its borders, it was akin to witchcraft. The official church doctrine prohibited arcane magic, so what flew in Candia may not fly with the rest of the Concord.

History and House Politics[]

At the start of the Ravening War, King Jadain of House Rocks was sovereign ruler of Candia. During the war, when Jadain refused to honor previous alliances with the Dairy Islands, his brother, Duke Joren of House Jawbreaker, went against this decision and aided them anyway, turning his House into a rebel state in the process. Jadain's children supported Joren's decision and they fought alongside each other, forging strong friendships and a national sense of gratitude for Candia's aid throughout the Islands.

Jadain's four daughters all lost their lives in the war, and shortly after its end, his son, Amethar, took the throne. In order for House Jawbreaker to remain at peace as a rebel state outside of the Concord, a member of the House, currently Amethar's cousin, Liam Wilhelmina, is kept as a political prisoner. Under this arrangement, Joren and House Jawbreaker are still allowed to hold land, and potential uprisings or conflicts are avoided.

On the 2nd of Brightdusk in the year 1215, after the death of the Concordant Emperor Gustavo Uvano, it was revealed by the Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica that Amethar had wed a citizen of the Dairy Islands during the war, and that it had never been annulled. As a result, Amethar's current relationship with Queen Caramelinda was deemed adulterous, and his two children with her, the Princesses Jet and Ruby Rocks, bastards. This meant that Amethar had become an oathbreaker, and that the rightful king of Candia was Duke Joren. Since Joren and House Jawbreaker were not a part of the Concord, upon this declaration, Candia became suddenly in rebellion with the Concord. Prior to this, several attempts were made on Amethar's life, potentially as part of this attempt to delegitimize House Rocks's claim to the Concordant Throne.

As the members of House Rocks fled Comida and traveled by sea and were delayed on their way back to Candia, Lord Calroy Cruller, a trusted advisor to the king, began moving Ceresian troops across the border. The night they arrived back home, Cruller staged a coup, but not before advising Amethar that Candia would fall if Castle Manylicks was overrun and diverting much of Candia's forces there. Soldiers from Muffinfield carrying the House Cruller coat of arms, along with Ceresian forces led by now Imperator Augustus Ciabatta, as well as Imperial and Bulbian soldiers, headed a multifaceted attack. Twin princesses Jet and Ruby, and Liam Wilhelmina were lured away from the castle into Dulcington, where Ciabatta and several other assassins were waiting in ambush. Jet was stabbed twice by watersteel daggers and did not survive. Lord Cruller took King Amethar to the highest tower in Castle Candy under the pretense of a walk with an old friend and stabbed him in the back with a watersteel dagger, then pushed him to fall to his death. Amethar survived.

As Liam and Ruby fled back to the castle, they met up with Cumulous Rocks and a severely injured Amethar. Just outside the castle walls, they reunite with Sir Theobald Gumbar and Queen Caramelinda, who had fled to a secret passage as both Muffinfield and Imperial soldiers closed in on them. The party quietly ran across the open hills in front of Castle Candy to the Cola river, where they met Manta Ray Jack and his ship, the Bel Baby, and sailed down river to the Great Stone Candy Mountains.

Castle Manylicks was indeed under attack, but it was too late for reinforcements. By the time the remains of House Rocks were introduced to Queen Saccharina of House Frostwhip, the lawful queen of Candia, and her band of marauders, Duke Joren Jawbreaker had been captured to be hanged for being in open rebellion. The party successfully ambushed the hanging and saved him, along with his wife Spearia Mentha.

Following the collapse of the Concord, Candia was invaded by Ceresia, who wished to turn Candia into a Ceresian province, as well as Fructera and Vegetania, at the behest of Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica, though the invasion fell apart soon after due to disagreements between the invading armies. Under threat of death in a crusade against House Rocks supporters and Bulbian nonbelievers, most of Calorum supported Lord Calroy Cruller as the lawful ruler of Candia. Meanwhile, both House Rocks and House Jawbreaker recognized Queen Saccharina as the rightful ruler, believing that her ascension to the throne would allow Candia to reenter the Concord and delegitimize the invasion.

In an attempt to broker peace between the four nations, Cruller invited then leaders Imperator Augustus Ciabatta, Lady Plumbeline Uvano, and Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica to Castle Candy as a neutral ground to negotiate the terms of a new Concord. During the rescue of Duke Joren, House Rocks was able to acquire letters and documents telling of this meeting, along with other vital news of their enemies, allowing them to plan a siege to reclaim their nation.

Three hours before dawn on the 13th of Highharvest, the combined forces of House Rocks, House Jawbreaker, the Dairy Islands, the Order of the Spinning Star and Saccharina's marauders launched an assault on castle candia. The battle ended in a victory for the Candian rebellion. King Amethar abdicated the throne to become the Concordant Emperor. The throne passed to his first daughter Queen Saccharina of House Frostwhip, with Princess Ruby Rocks staying in Candia to serve as an advisor to Queen Saccharina. Eventually, the new queen wished on a Seed of Change, resulting in the size of Candia quadrupling.
