Description[]
Cathilda is a halfling with dark brown eyes. She normally wears her maid uniform, as she's typically working whenever she's around Fabian and the audience is aware of her presence. Despite what Fabian may think, though, she does actually have other clothes that she wears.
As Cathilda the Black, she wears seven-league boots and a black dress with a high white collar that makes her looks like a widow in mourning. She wears a tricorne hat. In the fight with Captain James Whitclaw, she carries two dark steel scimitar-like swords.
She is an extremely chipper person and her face is always creased in a perpetual smile. She is a very helpful person and does her job very well. She acts as a maternal figure, both for Fabian and the rest of the Bad Kids after she's recruited as their hireling. She loves Fabian as if he were her own son, as her own children passed away before he was born.
Outside of Solace, Cathilda has a fearsome reputation as 'Cathilda the Black' as she is an extremely skilled whirling dervish dagger fighter. It's very rare that this side of her comes to the surface, but when it does, it's typically in response to someone threatening Fabian. If someone upsets her enough, she will make very serious and often violent threats as her eyes lose their luster, and any shred of remorse, empathy, or hesitation leaves her expression, in a frankly creepy look.
Freshman Year[]
Cathilda is not featured very heavily in the first part of the series. She prepares a green protein shake for Fabian during his introduction in The Beginning Begins.
She is later seen when the players return to Seacaster Manor, following the Brawl at the Black Pit. Hallariel offers to wake Cathilda in order to put out snacks for the group.
When the Bad Kids visit Madam Silvaine for Adaine's makeover, she acknowledges that Cathilda had been sent to pick up a 45 gold piece gift card. None of the players picked up on this indication that the gifts were from Fabian.
In First Kisses and Last Words, Cathilda brings in a tray of shots for The Bad Kids.
Cathilda has been seen to hold her own when the Seacaster Manor is attacked and single-handedly protects Hallariel Seacaster while she is in her sensory deprivation egg.
Fantasy High LIVE in Brooklyn[]
Cathilda helps to train Fabian alongside the instruction of Hallariel Seacaster. When Fabian complains, Hallariel argues back, telling him that the elven soldiers and arch mages that are keeping Aelwyn Abernant imprisoned won't go easy on him. She leaves them, telling Cathilda he's earned half a ration of kippers. Seeing as she's never been in the kitchen and doesn't know how much that is exactly, Cathilda promises to get him a full ration.
Fantasy High: Sophomore Year[]
Sophomores Start[]
Cathilda joins the Bad Kids on their mission to retrieve the Crown of the Nightmare King as a hireling, as suggested by Fabian after he noted her combat skills when Seacaster Manor was burning. She acts as maternal figure for the party, providing snacks for the kids, which she warms on the engine block of the Hangvan, and physically comforting them with blankets and hugs when they're hurt or distressed.
Leviathan Rock City[]
When the party reaches the city of Leviathan, it's revealed that she has a fearsome reputation as a ruthless pirate, and she is shown immediate respect by most of the pirates they first encounter, most notably the bosun Jamina Joy, out of the desire to prolong their lives in her presence. Still unaccustomed to Cathilda's abilities beyond her being a maid, Fabian finds it hard to grasp that they're kneeling for her and not him. Cathilda just pinches his cheek and suggests it might be best not to call attention to her than is needed.
The Friendship Section[]
After Fabian reveals the true events that took place when he fled losing battle with Captain James Whitclaw in the Crow's Keep, Cathilda comforts him in the back of the Hangvan and talks to him about her life with him and his father in Seacaster Manor. She reveals that she had several children, all of which died before Fabian was born, and eventually leads up to the touching declaration that Fabian is Bill's son as much as he is hers as well. She vows to get revenge on Whitclaw for what he did to Fabian in a very uncharacteristically menacing and frankly creepy affirmation.
The Row and the Ruction[]
She joins them when they travel to the Row and the Ruction to stop Whitclaw from crowning himself the pirate king and taking over Leviathan. When he confronts them at the door and talks down to her about her position as the Seacaster's maid, she steps forward and successfully intimidates him by saying she'll turn him into calamari.
First to act in the fight is Fabian, who turns to Cathilda for guidance, still unsure of what to do.
Pirates of Leviathan[]
Cathilda was inducted as an elder of The Ramble and was present to defend it against the troops of the Crescent Moon Trading Company.
Relationships[]
Fabian Seacaster[]
During his freshman year, Fabian typically regards Cathilda as nothing more than "the help". He seems to think there is a "maid code" that she follows that allows or prevents her from doing certain things, and even goes so far as to say that maids don't have dreams. Even though he has such ridiculous misconceptions about her, it's apparent in his interactions with her that he really appreciates what she does for him. She happily runs errands for him and often has his favorite snack ready for him before he even asks for it.
When Fabian was young, his father would be away for long periods of time, and his mother was very rarely sober, so Cathilda spent a lot of time with him as he grew up, taking care of him and singing him halfling lullabies. As her own children died before Fabian was born, she regards him as her own son, and she's very much a maternal figure in his life.
Fabian's opinion of her begins to change when he encounters her inside a burning Seacaster Manor holding her own against dozens of combatants. He's impressed by her skills and invites her along on his sophomore year adventure as a hireling, which she happily accepts. While adventuring, Fabian discovers more about Cathilda's life before Seacaster Manor and learns to respect her capabilities more.
Throughout their journey, Cathilda continues to take care of him and she opens up to him, telling him about her own children in order to comfort him. She supports him in their fight against Captain James Whitclaw, and Fabian later thanks her before she leaves their party. He tells her she's the best surrogate mother he could have.
William Seacaster[]
Bill is the master of Seacaster Manor and Cathilda's boss. She and Bill have a very amicable relationship, and Cathilda is happy in her job as he pays her very well. She's worked under him for a very long time, possibly 20 years or more, both as a maid and as crew on his ship, the Hangman. They have a great deal of trust in each other, as Cathilda was often left to care for his son, Fabian, when he was growing up.
Hallariel Seacaster[]
Hallariel is very much a non-entity in the Seacaster household who relies very heavily on Cathilda for care. She was rarely sober while Fabian grew up, leaving Cathilda to care for him instead. After the events of Prompocalypse, she and Cathilda take to training Fabian in swordfighting together.
During Fabian's sophomore year adventure, Hallariel travels to Kei Lumennura to visit her father and to fetch Cathilda and bring her home, as they've run out of food and she doesn't know how to cook. Cathilda bids the party goodbye, telling Fabian "two down, one to go": she's gonna teach Hallariel to be her own person.
