Description[]

"We see Cody who is a… He's a mall goth without a mall. He has a like Skrillex kind of haircut with like, long, black hair on the one side, and then shaved on the other side. And then he's got a blue streak going through his black hair. Very pale, he’s got some like eyeshadow on. So much leather. A duster, like a long black duster. And then, I think he hates Halloween because people always think he's dressed up and compliment his costume. And he has like-- he's a real sword guy. He's got like a big replica buster sword from Final Fantasy VII on his back, and a bunch of other swords around him, and like kunai and things like that. And ninja throwing stars. And always has a cigarette in his mouth, and is just a eternally pissed off and was pissed off before the mall got closed down and is even more now and he's just waiting for the construction workers to turn around so that he can chuck a ninja star at some of the Gladiator signs [deeper voice] because I fucking hate Gladiator. [Emily: He has the tiniest cigarettes, it's like… smooshed.] He picks up butts off the ground, then he relights them." Brian Murphy

Appearance[]

Cody has black hair in a Skrillex-like haircut-- one side is shaved, and a blue streak runs down the front. Cody is very pale and wears a little eye shadow. He wears a lot of leather along with a long black duster. He owns (carries?) 12 swords, including a large Final Fantasy VII replica buster sword, which has since been confiscated by the police. He also carries ninja stars and is always smoking really tiny cigarettes. He wields Thirsting Blade Dark Excalibur Mega-Genesis.

Personality[]

Cody is extremely committed to his goth aesthetic. He takes deep pride in his work as a Hot Topic manager, even going so far as to break into the shut-down mall after hours to rescue some of the merchandise that was left behind. He gets very upset and aggressive towards people and situations where he can't get his way, such as his mall being shut down by Gladiator, or his roommates voting not to display swords in the living room. Despite this, though, he's not very threatening.

Background[]

Cody worked as a manager at the Hot Topic manager in the Queens Center Mall for many years. It is being torn down after being purchased by Gladiator, an online media, shipping and fulfillment company, in order to build a massive new warehouse shipping center and campus.

History[]

The Fall of New York City[]

Cody broke into the closed mall to steal the remaining abandoned items from the now closed Hot Topic he used to manage. While there, he stumbled upon a book with ancient runes. Reading the only Latin he could understand, he freed a devil from The Nine Hells. Mistaking the devil for Lucifer, Cody sold his soul on the back of a Roman Reigns poster to Bazathrax in exchange for the privilege of working for him and for powers so he could save the mall.

Relationships[]

Pete Conlan[]

They first met when Pete was accepted into the same apartment as Cody, and they were roommates. As the previous outsider in the group, Pete very quickly begins backing up Cody on all of his ideas when the rest of the group opposes them, like throwing Big Gulps in anger at the Macys Parade. Pete tends to look out for Cody when he can – Pete pitching in to help Cody carry his large sword when it became too cumbersome to handle, as well as sharing a bed together after Cody lost his own bed. Overtime, the two bonded over goofing off together and encouraging each other to do stupid stuff.

Ricky Matsui[]

Like many of Cody's relationships in the series, Cody and Ricky did not get off to a great start. For much of the series, the relationship between Ricky and Cody is one-sided, as Cody is oblivious to Ricky's many attempts to politely dissuade him. By the finale, the two have become comfortable enough with one another to fight side by side in battle and are on good terms, even if Ricky still finds it difficult to meaningfully connect with Cody.

Kingston Brown[]

Due to the generational gap between Kingston and Cody, much of Cody's attempts to connect with Kingston through referencing his favorite media (wrestling, video games) don't go well. Kingston mainly sees Cody as someone who needs guidance in order to keep out of trouble.

Trivia[]

  • Cody is Brian Murphy's second character in the world of The Unsleeping City.
  • Cody coincidentally shares his name with a very kind taxi driver that brought Brennan to the airport one fateful New Year’s Eve.
  • He has read Dante’s Inferno.
