Pirates of Leviathan

Description[]

The Crescent Moon Trading Company operates out of warehouses in Aftward, the banking and trading district on Leviathan. One such warehouse has been converted into an office-like space with dozens of desks where merchants do business with their clients. There are no walls between the desks and the walls are lined with huge shelves of leather-bound trade logs. Among these desks is that of Langley Sheffield-Harrington. It is a beautiful wrought and gilded mahogany desk with a leather pad on top and fresh ink in a crystal decanter with a long quill pen. In its drawers are all manner of important documents, including addresses of clients, and insurance paperwork.

Business[]

The Company does business trading goods, which includes illicit items, but also property and real estate. They own about 20% of all property in Leviathan, and have taken out insurance policies on much of it, including 15 major locations, one of which is the Ramble itself.

Some of this business involves renting homes to lower-class citizens of Leviathan. As the locations legally belong to the company, any insurance payouts involved with it and its damage or destruction goes to them and not the renters in a force majeure. They claim no responsibility for finding the renters a new home.

This scam is helped largely due to the legal changes they were able to make after the death of the pirate king. The new policy (act of gods) allows them to take advantage of any insurance plans they invest in, which are now almost entirely in their favor, and capitalize on the payouts by invoking divine occurrences themselves. As this may be considered insurance fraud, much of their policies are signed with the forged signature of Marcid the Typhoon to act as a fall guy should there be consequences.

Employees[]

  • Langley Sheffield-Harrington - runs the company as governor-commander, but also does business with customers in person
  • Marcid the Typhoon - an enforcer and personal bodyguard to Langley
  • Clive Mardres - lieutenant of the company's private navy
  • Grover Leforge - a clerk that files and keeps paperwork in their Aftward warehouse
  • Merchants - work on the trading floor dealing with customers and making business deals
  • Guards - work as protection for the company's employees and assets, some belonging to their private navy
  • Freelancers - the company occasionally employs freelancers who assist in acquiring merchandise

Background[]

The merchants of Crescent Moon have understood for quite some time that it is better to work with pirates than against them. After the death of the pirate king, and some legal proceedings at the Row and the Ruction, they were able to make some legal changes concerning insurance policies. These were recognized by the new Ramble, which was being built using money lent by the Trading Company. In a force majeure, insurance would typically cover unforeseen circumstances such as acts of God (ie. natural disasters), but after their changes, now covers acts of gods. This includes the previously covered acts of God, but also any divine occurrences that may cause damage to goods.

Approximately two years ago, Jack Brakkow purchased a ship from the Crescent Moon Trading Company, the Late Bloomer. His first mate, Clive McDoon, changed his name to Clive Mardres and became lieutenant of the Company's navy after their ship sank.
