Family Ties is the thirteenth episode of season 5, A Crown of Candy.

Recap[]

"Welcome, one and all to another exciting episode of A Crown of Candy. I'm your humble Dungeon Master, Brennan Lee Mulligan. With me, as always, are our Intrepid Heroes. Say hi, Intrepid Heroes. Last we left our Intrepid Heroes off, they were in transit. Our heroes arrive, in a flash of light appearing back at the Order of the Spinning Star in the teleportation chamber. As you arrive, townsfolk are shocked and flee, and begin to thank you guys. Some of them are weeping, crying. Spearia Mentha is here with… Joren Jawbreaker's on the floor next to Liam lying down. Still with the fresh marks of the gallows noose around his neck. The rest of you are here, having just dived in at the last possible moment before Caramelinda returned you all to the monastery. As the people spill out, monks of the Spinning Star begin to shepherd people to the infirmary and places where wounds can be tended to, people that were maybe attacked or jostled or hurt by the Ceresian soldiers. And you guys are carrying… Well, Swifty and Gooey are carrying a load of magical weaponry. You have a book filled with letters from the Archbishop Oliver Onionpatch filled with alchemical notes from the Primogen Alfredi, as well as personal correspondences of the Archbishop. Ruby, you are carrying troop movements, supply lines, maps of the Ceresian forces, and a tremendous amount of correspondences to Keradin Deeproot concerning inter-army chatter between the forces of the Church here and the Ceresian military. And of course you have rescued both Joren Jawbreaker and his wife, Spearia Mentha."

Synopsis[]

In a flash of light the party, the Jawbreakers, and the rescued villagers arrive in the Order of the Spinning Star. The people spill out of the room and are their injuries are tended to. Spearia tends to her husband and thanks them for saving them and hugs Liam in an A+ mom hug. Theo gets into the hug in order to talk to Spearia about the possibility that other druids could help the Ceresians follow them via teleportation. The group discuss the possibility that the Sugar-Plum Fairy herself may help the Ceresians. Saccharina insists that she would because she is just a folk deity deriving power from the Bulb to which Ruby has some push back as she thinks the Sugar-Plum Fairy is on their side and would not. Saccharina dismisses her ideas and her presence and Ruby leaves with Amethar following after. Spearia looks inside Saccharina's soul and sees a storm inside her that is bleeding into the world and she needs to sage the monastery to cleanse the place of that energy.

Cumulous takes the time to investigate the magical artifacts and finds they are not high magic but still could be useful for general forces. Liam and Cumulous head off to the library to go over the intel they found with scholarly monks. Amethar and Jawbreaker talk about who is the true ruler of Candia and how backing Saccharina is the smart choice. After pushes back and the reveal of Jet's death Jawbreaker is willing to see reason. They approach Saccharina and Gooey on a balcony with Theo who give her their endorsement to her claim of queen. She thanks them though is hurt by knowing it is not offered with enthusiasm and goes off with Gooey to her people.

Ruby goes to join Liam in the Library. They discuss how the others seem to think that brokering this alliance will end their problems but neither can go back to the status quo. At this point Liam tells Ruby that he killed the Archbishop and she approves. He also apologizes for finding closure about Preston at Jet's funeral she reassures him that its okay to not process grief well because she also is not. They start looking over the maps and Sir Keradin's things while Cumulous and the monks go over the Archbishops book and letters. Theo approaches Saccharina with concerns that they may be attacked at night by Sugar-Plum Fairy agents but she reasures him that it is unlikely and that the marauders will be up all night celebrating with Jon Bon standing watch of the monastery (he will also be peeing the entire time).

The party awakens the next morning from their rest. It is the 6th day of Harvestdawn. The fall has begun and days are getting colder. After going over the intel they find military movements all through Candia along with tension of lost alliances between the nations. They also find out that the Pontifex has called a holy crusaude on Candia because she has re-instituted the Ramsian Doctrine as an official church doctrine and Ceresia, Fructera, and Vegetania are taking part. With the war council concluded Jawbreaker and Spear return to Castle Manylicks with the Caramelinda and the escort of Manta Ray and his crew to gather their armies together. Knowing the monastery is a target the monks collect their artifacts and bring it back to the marauder's hideout and ready the teleportation runes to be dissembled after the party leaves for the Ice Cream Temple.

Before heading off Amethar, Ruby, and Caramelinda stand together. Ruby and her mother talk about how long she has known magic and why it was never a part of the princesses lessons. After Ruby makes a comment that maybe they wouldn't have run away if they had been trusted more Caramelinda turns and walks away hurt. She passes Saccharina and they share a look between two people who are living lives neither wanted but had no choice but to live. Amethar takes Ruby aside and has a heart to heart about how he has been a bad father to her and has not helped with her grief over Jet, but she is not alone and never will be as long as she choose to live and not push all her friends away. As they hug, Saccharina watch jealously from a far.

The party gathers at the teleportation rune accompanied by Swifty, Gooey, and Jon Bon. Before they leave Saccharina reminds them that all others sent to the temple have not returned to which Theo asks if this was under Gooey's watch. Having enough of Theo undermining her Gooey starts threatening him which devolving into them accidentally both admitting they are attracted to each other. Before thing can get weirder Cumulous transports them all to the steps leading up further into the mountains. They ascend to the top of the mountain and arrive at the temple gates. Saccharina holds her ice scoop up to it and the door opens to natural caverns conveniently shaped. Cumulous walks in right to a trap of cold. Continue on walking through with Saccharina walking ahead with her Winter Scoop unlocking traps as they go. Their are many eyes of gold and plum watching Saccharina. Amethar sees a smile of blue, his sister Sapphira, but no one else does. Ruby notices that they do not have any shadows as they walk. Liam smells ice cream but for a second he smells hot chocolate and cinnamon.

On a door is the actual name of the Sugar-Plum Fairy which is unspeakable because it has been lost. Theo remembers it appearing in the sky moments before a hail of arcane arrows won the Battle of Thinolia when Lazuli fell. They also see a steel door that leads to an armory. Ruby mage hands the door open causing traps to go off revealing a library. They go in and find books on Candia. Liam finds a bestiary book in Bulbosi about spirits that were deemed false ideals proving that all the lands of Calorum has had the beings everywhere. On the last page talks about the Dracoria Azucar which is an inverted Sugar-Plum Fairy run covered in spikes and surrounded by magic with a dark chocolate egg at the center. The book slams shut and is sucked down the hallway and vanishes. Saccharina leans over and tells him that it is what they are actually there for. The dragon or the egg.

They walk back out and go through the other door. They enter an enormous chamber at the heart of the mountain that opens to a deep cavern and center of a large spire of ice cream scoops is a dark chocolate egg. Before them the Sugar-Plum Fairy appears. Amethar sees this being flicker. She holds out a mended tea cup, a peppermint heart seed, and Lapin's note. In the deep mist Ruby sees her aunts and Jet's silhouettes and behind are other familiar shapes. The Fairy offers to take her to a sugary-sweet, pure place down in the mist to keep them and all of Candia's magic safe.

Ruby asks her sister in the mist if this is true in twin-speak. Jet responds back, "It is, but I don't know if its a good thing." Liam thanks the Sugar-Plum Fairy for returning the teacup and goes to accept the offer. Before he can Ruby cuts in and declines the offer because everyone down there is dead and they need to protect Candia. The Sugar-Plum Fairy does not understand because that is what she is doing, she sent Lapin there to save them, she made sure they would lose everything to get them all there. Ruby asks if she killed Jet and the Fairy asks if she would have come if she had not. Ruby pulls her bow out and aims it at the Sugar-Plum Fairy.
