Background[]
In the past, Pinocchio was once a real boy. The Wicked Fairy came to his village, Amanti, and offered the children a chance to play with a glowing ball, if they truthfully answered her questions. One by one, the children told her the names of their fathers when she asked, followed by a scream from the village each time. When Pinocchio was called, he told her that his father's name was Daniel. No scream came - instead, Pinocchio's body was stolen from him, and he was turned into a puppet.
Later, the Stepmother married his ailing father, and promised Pinocchio she would look after him, but with a sinister undertone, implying her power over the both of them.
Geppetto is mentioned to be in poor health. It is unknown if this was caused by the Stepmother.
History[]
During his death scene, Pinocchio saw a vision of Geppetto telling him not to trust the Stepmother. In order to make Pinnochio's magic stronger, The Stepmother took some of Geppetto's blood for some sort of blood sacrificial ritual.
While Pinocchio is carrying out his chore for Baba Yaga, he sees a magical door that he remembers is one that is used by the Stepmother. After listening to her threaten him, Geppetto speaks to his son saying he only needs to tell the truth, and they'll be okay. As the wooden boy explains that that's not enough in the world anymore, blood begins to seep from under the door. Pinocchio then opens the door, and Geppetto is being held by the monstrous version of the Stepmother he saw in between worlds. Blood comes from his mouth, one of his arms is broken, and there's an open wound in his chest. There is also a string tying he and the wooden boy together. It is the brightest and strongest string that Pinocchio has. However, it is not his string. It's a string to Geppetto's heart that is tied to his son's; his living heart outside of his body. At this point the Baba Yaga asks what Pinocchio would do to chance his story. The puppet thinks about the way Geppetto treated him when he turned back into a puppet from a real boy, and realizes that he would rather have his father in any way than not at all. So after giving up his opportunity to be a real boy again, the string connecting the two glows with a blinding light, causing the Stepmother to fall back and dropping Geppetto. The string turns into a safety net, catching Geppetto which transports him to a different place away from the Stepmother's evil grasp into the Lines Between.
During the final battle in the Canonade, Turquina is able to grab Geppetto out of the pages within the room to the safety of Baba Yaga's hut.
