Graveyard of Good and Evil is the seventh episode of season 1, Fantasy High.

The Bad Kids investigate Cravencroft Cemetery, Zayn Darkshadow's apartment, and the Durinson Mithral Factory in search of information.

Recap[]

"Last we left off, y'all were in Seacaster Manor having a lovely time with Fabian's dad, Bill, and his crew of pirates... So the sun rises over Elmville. Far away, the tape around the crime scene of the Black Pit is going up and police are investigating what may or may not have happened there-- pretty wild fucking event. However, you guys are all on a giant wooden balcony... you've been up all night."

Synopsis[]

The sun rises on Seacaster Manor to reveal that Bill Seacaster has kept the Bad Kids awake all night partying and singing shanties. Fabian expresses disapproval when his father openly takes some snuff powder. Fig asks Bill for some snuff powder and he gladly offers it to her. Kristen also has some but seemingly pretends to take it. A buzzed Bill tells the party all about the only real law: the law of the blade (kill or be killed).

When he questions the party about the events of the previous night, he realizes that they had no tactics: Fabian left the unprotected Adaine behind; their healer, Kristen, was isolated and knocked out; and no one can explain why they even participated in the fight. Bill explains that if they fight without a reason or goal (fighting for blood rather than gold) that they'll end up dead. Bill forces the kids to skip school, runs them through combat drills, and forbids them from contacting their parents.

The group tries to decide on a common language that they can use to communicate privately during fights. Fig suggests they come up with their own language but the idea is instantly vetoed. They eventually decide on elvish, although Kristen only speaks religious elvish from her mission trips and Gorgug doesn't speak it at all. They agree to teach Gorgug a few relevant words like "stay" and "run".

At the end of the day, before he sends them home, Bill asks the group if they have a captain. They give a variety of answers as to who their leader is. The group ultimately concludes that there is no one leader and that they will act as a democracy, which Bill seems dubious about. After the group leaves, Bill reveals the newly renovated Hangman - once Johnny Spells's motorcycle - to Fabian. In celebration, Fabian takes his father out for a ride with Bill, cutting down mailboxes as they go.

The next morning, Fig stops by Gilear's apartment before school. She tells him about the open faculty positions at Aguefort and expresses a desire to see him more regularly. He claims that he has some potential jobs coming up, but Fig casts Detect Thoughts on him and realizes that he's lying. Gilear cleans up, Fig helps him with an illusory hat to cover his thinning hair, and they head off to school together.

When they arrive at Aguefort, Fig takes Gilear straight to Vice Principal Goldenhoard's office and Gilear begins to list his qualifications for the guidance counselor position. Goldenhoard cuts him off and informs him that the position has already been filled by Jawbone, the werewolf and former drug dealer the group met at the Black Pit in Episode 6. Resigned, Gilear agrees to take on the lunch lady position vacated by Doreen. Fig quickly renames the position to Lunch Lad despite his and Goldenhoard's protests.

At lunch that day, Adaine asks the group to take her shopping because she only has her Hudol uniform to wear and her parents will not buy her any other clothes. Kristen, Gorgug, and Fig offer to go with her; Fabian offers her a giftcard. As the group begins to talk about Zayn Darkshadow, Zelda Donovan overhears. She tells them that he didn't show up to school the day before and suggests that they look for him at the Cravencroft Cemetery. Gorgug tries to apologize again for going into a rage in front of her in Episode 5, but they both descend into awkward stammering and she leaves.

Riz wants to steal the cafeteria's medical kit. Fig and Gorgug decide to use Thaumaturgy and fake an earthquake as a distraction, but Gorgug accidentally shouts "Tornado!" instead of "Earthquake!" Ragh runs up to Gorgug and smashes his head into a table, but Adaine casts Ray of Sickness on him. Kristen uses the distraction to steal a coat for Adaine, which turns out to be Gorgug's hoodie. Riz successfully steals the medical kit during the commotion. He is seen only by the new Lunch Lad, Gilear, who doesn't stop him. Fig sets up a tip jar for her father, but it is immediately filled with cruel notes. As their lunch period ends, they agree to meet up at Cravencroft Cemetery after school.

Kristen, feeling especially uncertain about her religion since meeting Tracker, finds Coach Daybreak after lunch. She asks for advice about her "friend" who has been struggling with her faith. He bluntly recommends that she cut this "friend"' out of her life because they're going straight to hell. Kristen tries to have a philosophical discussion about religion and mentions the crusades she read about in her book. Coach Daybreak shuts her down, telling her that good people believe in Helio, bad people don't, and that there's nothing wrong with hurting non-believers. When she mentions that her "friend" is gay, he tells her that she's going to hell. He reveals that his faith is so strong and uncomplicated that he has an intense anger for those unlike him. He encourages Kristen to embrace that rage. Kristen awkwardly tells him that she plans to hang out with non-Helioic people from now on. She also gives him her "Remember to Pray" bracelet, saying she won't need it anymore. Kristen says an amicable goodbye to Coach Daybreak and leaves even more confused and horrified than she already was.

As the group starts walking to Cravencroft Cemetery, they pass a new business, KVX Bank, that has just opened up next to the school. The group briefly investigates the bank but finds nothing significant except for the fact that the bank has, to their horror, no free pens or lollipops. Adaine sees many magical enchantments on the bank and workers moving large amounts of gold from trucks into the bank. An incurious Fabian leads the group away.

They arrive at Cravencroft after sunset. Riz sees his father's grave but says nothing to the rest of the group. Fig, realizes that if Zayn was invisible, his pet rat would also be invisible. She casts a Minor Illusion of a Sexy Rat to try to lure Zayn's rat to them. Fabian is disgusted, but Kristen and Riz admit that they think the rat is sexy. The rat runs off into the graveyard but is almost immediately grabbed by an owl. Adaine suddenly notices that the trees are filled with owls and that the edge of the graveyard is lined with numerous cats, all of which are watching the party. She shares this with the group and Kristen casts Detect Good and Evil; she gets a faint aura of menace from one of the cats before all the animals begin to fly or slink away.

Sylvester, the Cravencroft undertaker, seemingly appears out of nowhere and points out the unusual number of owls. Fig questions him about the tiefling greasers and Sylvester tells them that very few people have come to visit their graves. Fig creates another sexy rat at Kristen's request and Kristen casts Light on it. Gorgug realizes that, while it's unlikely, there's a chance that Sylvester might be his dad. Gorgug asks, but Sylvester says that he can't be Gorgug's father because of a penny-farthing bicycle accident that "messed up his junk".

When Adaine asks about Zayn, Sylvester reveals that he constantly hung out at the cemetery, dancing around and reciting poetry to the graves. As Riz and Adaine question him further, Sylvester reveals that Zayn actually named himself when he sued for emancipation from the foster system and that he lived down the street above a deli. They realize that Sylvester has been talking about Zayn in the past tense. He reveals a small white pearl that Adaine identifies as Zayn's necromancer pearl, which marks the living status of the person that has been attuned to the pearl. The pearl has turned from jet black to icy white, signifying that Zayn has died. Adaine confirms this fact when she looks into the pearl and sees an image of Zayn's dead body. Fig texts Zayn's number from Johnny Spells's burner phone to contact either Zayn or whoever killed him. She receives no immediate reply.

The Bad Kids head to Zayn's apartment. Riz easily picks the lock and they find the small studio completely wrecked. Adaine finds some star maps and instructions for a ritual that relies on a specific date and time, which she believes has already happened. She also finds some magic residue of blood being cleaned up. Kristen notices a rat cage with its door unlatched but not damaged - seemingly opened during the conflict to help the rat escape. Riz finds a small bottle of pills for cosmetically cooling down one's body; apparently Zayn took them to contribute to his goth aesthetic. He also finds Johnny Spells's soul contract with Gorthalax the Insatiable under the bed, which would have given Zayn immense power over Johnny. Their investigation leads them to believe that Zayn was reverse-engineering the ritual that Johnny Spells used to become a warlock. Using the star charts and specific dates, Adaine believes that she could calculate the location of the ritual.

Riz realizes that, despite the fact that Zayn was a necromancing wizard, there are many religious notes with similar symbols to those on the page that animated the Corn Ooze. Most of those pages appear to have been ripped out, preventing the group from finding any other clues. Fig texts Zayn's phone again to try and find it in the room but the group hears no noise.

Gorgug identifies that the weapon used to cause the damage was a two-handed slashing weapon. Fig immediately accuses Porter but the others point out that he doesn't carry a slashing weapon. Riz brings up Coach Daybreak and Gorgug suggests that Ragh might have been responsible. The group realizes that both Zayn and Ragh interacted with Kristen's bible before it was thrown into the vat of corn on the first day.

Adaine narrows down the location of the ritual to somewhere high up on the East side of town. This area includes the abandoned Durinson Mithral Factory, but it also includes the Strongtower Luxury Apartments. Adaine becomes aware that the group is making important decisions based on her arcane research and nearly has a panic attack. With the help of a confusing wink from Kristen, she realizes that the ritual's requirements would prevent it from being conducted downtown due to the light pollution and concludes that the Durinson Mithral Factory is the only place where the ritual could have taken place.

After some discussion, the group decides to investigate the factory and tell anyone who catches them that they're trying to plan a party. Adaine casts Unseen Servant to clean up any evidence of them being at Zayn's apartment and the group leaves. On the way, Kristen gives the group an inspiring yet confused speech, questioning her religion and her sexuality. When Fabian calls the Hangman to meet them at the Mithral factory, it reveals that it took Johnny Spells there often to meet with his patron, Gorthalax the Insatiable. The group calls a car to take them to the mithral factory. As they drive, Kristen spies more owls in the night sky.

The car drops them off at the gate of the factory and Fabian reconnects with the Hangman. From inside the factory, which sits on the edge of a cliff, Kristen hears the sound of wheels grinding and voices speaking in dwarvish. Adaine casts Comprehend Languages and realizes that the voices are, in fact, skaters. Fabian asks the Hangman to lead the way but forgets to tell it to be any semblance of stealthy. The Hangman immediately takes off and crashes through the chain-link fence. The sounds from inside the factory suddenly stop. A voice calls out to the group and challenges them.

The group, led by Fig and her Minor Illusion of a skateboard, enters the factory. They find a rudimentary skatepark built into the dilapidated building and a group of young dwarven skaters filming tricks on their crystals. Riz hides while the rest of The Bad Kids greet the skaters and try to convince them they are just there to research for their new streetwear company; however, the leader, a young girl named Torek Railgrinder, doesn't believe their story and continues to threaten them.

Kristen notices that the owls that were surrounding them suddenly fly away. She senses that the group has led the creatures to something they were looking for and that the owls are going to go get something. Torek and the other dwarves begin calling "Crush!" over and over again. An enormous pavement golem with a halfpipe on its back begins to rise from the ground. The skaters and the Bad Kids prepare to battle.
