Description[]

Unlike the subways and the bus routes that run with the grain of ley lines in New York, a lot of the highways run against it. This creates a tumultuous arcane effect that the Gramercy Occult Society has loosely named the "highway hex". Many highways such as the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Major Deegan Expressway end up creating pathways of energies that dilute ley lines, which makes teleporting into and out of New York very difficult, especially for beings of power. The hex is partially powered by the traffic that travels along these highways, as people have an inherent magic in them. Even people that can't see the Unsleeping City still has a heart and a soul and contribute to the hex.

Robert Moses is partially responsible for creating the Highway Hex. Though he was never elected, he was a part of many different government boards and had a lot to do with the building and infrastructure of New York, including the roads and highways. He used his positions to influence the creation of the hex, which prevents the powerful beings of both Hell and Faerie from entering the city and claiming his soul.

The Gramercy Occult Society headquarters beneath the New York Public Library contains a map of the city's five boroughs that depicts the Highway Hex. The highways on the map pulse red, and it makes Ricky Matsui's Divine Sense tingle a little bit.

While the Highway Hex can block powerful planar entities, but isn't fool proof. Weaker beings, such as, Don Confetti, Isabella Infierno and Bazathrax can squeeze through. This is why Don Confetti, and later Isabella Infierno are sent as envoys by Faerie and Lucifer, respectively. Bazathrax, who is noted as being a rather weaker devil, is around the cap of what can and cannot enter the city. There are someways around this, as Titania could enter using the mirror, yet was still unable to directly meet Confetti. The Jersey Devil, which was noted as being stronger than Bazathrax, fully intended to enter New York through the Holland Tunnel, though this could be because the Gramercy Occult Society's protective runes had been dismantled.
