K's Anatomy is the fifth episode of season 23, Misfits and Magic Season 2.
Recap[]
"So, we've begun a new day in a place Tabby referred to as Seegenpelater, a picturesque isle with magic that bends very specifically towards the mind. Tempers flared as exhaustion set in. K and Evan's row may have been a long time coming, but even your familiars are starting to show signs of your inner tumult and strain. Jammer and Evan connected with friends from home, Sam and K had a lovely heart to heart, and everyone successfully sidestepped the need for mortal sleep with the clever application of magic. Speaking of which, Tabby shared an insight with all of you.
According to his watching of the spells you cast in the worlds and islands that you've moved through, the Pilot Program has sort of alighted on one of the foundational steps in this new magic system: intention, being that first key towards spellcasting. The group soon descended on an encampment, and you found the targets of your quest: Boudicca Philtrum and a contingent of your classmates from Gowpenny, and a couple wizards you never really met found a way to survive, but it wasn't quite right.
You led them back, completed your quest as intended, as Dr. Boodle asked you to do. You took them back to your hoopty, and Boudicca, Boudy-boots, still the same old butthole, immediately planned to destroy Tabby and refused the call to search for an understanding of the new magic, instead burning whatever vestiges of the old magic still existed in the world to fuel her spellcasting and her gifts. She attacked K, but was destroyed by Evan before K even hit the ground, and a clever use of K's pince-nez of truth showed you a better look at the struggles of your friends and classmates since you all left Gowpenny. It's been very hard to make a life, in a way, when all you know is magic, and the breaking has been more difficult for your wizard friends than the rest. Both she and Coggle Undergus encouraged you to leave before others on the island would come and try to take your magic, and possibly harm you. And now our Pilot Program, with their test technically complete, will you pack up and go home, or brave further storms?"
Synopsis[]
Still on Seeganpelator, the Misfits discuss their next moves. K, still in pain, suggests they go to Gowpenny, but Sam insists that they fix K’s broken ribs. K decides to lean into the magic of Convince, and casts a spell to convince themselves that they’re okay. The spell works, almost too well, as they are still aware of their ribs grinding against each other, but it doesn’t hurt. They reach out through their bond to Teddy, and extends the same tranquility to him, and can tell he’s returning back to his normal self, as he tucks a piece of clothing under himself to use as a makeshift pillow.
Seeing how calm K is, Sam asks if they also accidentally took drugs. K says it’s similar to that, but that they gave themselves magical downers, rather than uppers, and Sam agrees that’s for the best, and that she won’t be using magical cocaine again. Jammer asks the group what they should do next, as their objective is technically complete. Sam states that she would still like to fix magic, and K speculates that the new magic system is nice, being less structured than the last. Evan adds that if sharing the secrets of magic is what broke magic, then the timer on the old system began with the printing press, and it was a miracle that it lasted several centuries after that. He concludes that while he feels bad about ruining wizard civilization, but that if it weren’t the Misfits, then it would’ve been someone else, as this was inevitable. Jammer further postulates that they can’t save magic, but it begs the question what their next course of action is, having reached the limit of Dr. Boodle’s plan. Evan outlines the insanity of Boodle’s plan, and despite his knowledge of magic, Evan sets forth that he’s no longer in charge. K thinks back to the beasts they’ve come across, which seem to have greater perspectives on magic, including the Tadeshacourt, and Sam asks if they should go visit a different island and speak to a different one. K brings up that Jammer gave Tad a nickname, and could possibly find him. Jammer expresses unease, but Evan brings up that Tad specifically relates to the concept of magic lessening, although he was bent on eating wizards. K reminds the group that Tad did warn them, but Jammer remains unconvinced, as the last time they met him, they beat him up and Sam stabbed him. Jammer is also concerned since K is still injured, even if they can’t feel the pain. Sam agrees they should visit Tad, but K asks Jammer if they need to return him to the Namp world, back to basketball. Jammer refuses, saying this is where the game is, and confirms to the group if the plan is to hope Tad will help them.
Evan points out that the only other idea they have is to try to go to Gowpenny directly, but that the storm has been unpredictable, and they haven’t been able to get anywhere intentionally except for The Qohlye, and posits that the storm might have an agenda of its own. Jammer throws the sock, but since Tad was never officially made a part of the team, and the nickname Tad wasn’t given by Jammer, it doesn’t work. Jammer explains that he doesn’t personally view him as on the team, nor does he have the same positive opinion of him that the rest of the group seems to, and Evan says he respects that. K admits that they’ve been romanticizing their last encounter with the Tadeshacourt in their head, and that it might not align with reality. Jammer explains that he found The Qohlye by communicating with Tabby through magic, and he might attempt that again. K asks why he thinks Tabby doesn’t like him, and Jammer says it’s likely because he doesn’t like Tabby, and Tabby responds with his dislike of Jammer. Jammer tries to connect with Tabby again through magic, he feels his magical potential crest, and he realizes how low on energy Tabby is. He manages to grab information, and feels that he knows the way to the Tadeshacourt, but his mind wanders, wondering what Tabby needs to get back up to strength, and donates some of his magic to him. K and Sam offer some of their magic to Jammer, helping ease his connection, chanting that Jammer and Tabby will become friends.
Jammer feels Tabby reach back, directing them to the center, where they would like to go, but he offers him a larger view of the orrery. Jammer thinks back to K and their injury, and Tabby alights a different orb, bright red, two circling islands with a spot of red in the center. As the connection fades, Jammer inquires as to what Tabby wants, as his friends all seem to ascribe feelings to him, but haven’t actually asked. He then realizes that Tabby is shy, which is why he will sometimes not speak to them, and then he has a vision of Tabby being inserted into a wall, connected to a bunch of other points of light, within the orrery. He deduces that this means that Tabby wants to understand the connections between things, and is seeking community, to be a part of something. He breaks the connection, and Tabby’s second stone shows Jammer’s name in a heart. He explains that they two had a moment, and that Tabby is part of something larger, or that’s what he would like. He then says that they were given a few options of what to do next, the green space where Tad can be found, or a red space that seems to be a place they can recuperate, and that the center is where they ultimately want to go. K wonders if Tabby didn’t like Jammer at first because they were too similar, because they both want community. Evan expresses discomfort with how K and Sam are obsessed with the idea of Jammer and Tabby being friends, as the two are having a genuine moment of connection. K and Sam apologize, and Tabby draws a picture of K on his other tablet.
Moving on, Jammer says they should probably go heal, as the journey ahead of them is dangerous. K agrees, because while they feel great, they are able to make audible sounds with their ribs grinding together, aggravating their wound, with the rest of their friends begging them to stop. The group look around, trying to figure out which way the red island might be, and spot a high peak nearby, deciding it would be useful to get a better vantage point. Not wanting to risk spending unnecessary time on the cannibal island, Sam hops on her broom and flies straight up, with Evan accompanying her. Jammer stays behind to protect K and the hoopty. Up in the sky, Evan spots sailboats on the horizon, indicating that people move from island to island. Looking over at the peak, they spot seeing stones, arranged in a henge. In the distance, they see Galamanis, and in a ninety degree turn, they see two islands orbiting each other, and identify them as the red islands that they’re searching for. Evan asks Sam if she’d like to visit the henge, taking care to note that they are still in danger as long as they are on this island, and Sam says it’s worth investigating.
Back at the hoopty, Jammer searches the glovebox for any medical supplies to help K, but comes up empty-handed. K thanks him anyway, and tells Jammer that they’ll try to do better about taking care of themselves, and that they’ve been trying to teach Tabby about humanity. Jammer takes a moment to ask how K has been, noting that he’s seen at least ninety different cellphone numbers from them in the group chat over the years, and being cryptic about what they’ve been doing. K tells him about how they help online magic users, and making ARGs (augmented reality games), which Jammer is unfamiliar with, in order to help share magic. They admit that they hoped that by tending to it, it would help the chaos they’d created by revealing the secrets. After Evan and K had split, K wanted to keep watch over it, hoping it would help out his cause as well. K asks Jammer why he stopped participating in magic, and Jammer confesses that when he first got to Gowpenny, he didn’t realize it was magical. Despite his initial misconceptions, it was a deeply meaningful and important experience for him, but when he was told that he couldn’t leave, he had to choose his other responsibilities, to his mom and to take care of his family. However, when he returned to the Namp world, he found that telling people about those adventures scared them, such as telling his mom that he was chased by a dragon, and he realized how a lot of people weren’t ready for the knowledge of magic. K agrees that it’s difficult to try to be part of both worlds, and wonders if the Pevensies in The Chronicals of Narnia had similar issues adjusting.
K points out that Jammer makes community wherever he goes, rather effortlessly, and that they may have pushed themselves trying to do so with the internet, but that both of them should look out for their own needs. Jammer hugs them, and K thanks him for being a good friend, and asks how they can offer the same support to him. Jokingly, he asks them how to get the makeup from their face off of his clothes. Feeling the community he’s been searching for, Jammer meditates on how overloaded the day has been, and how tense he’s been on this adventure until this moment, and connecting with K in person after years of not seeing them, he feels relief, feeling their bond, and the whole team’s, strengthen and not fall apart, even bringing Tabby into the fold. As he releases K, he gets the sense of a hoof coming off of his sternum, implying that The Qohlye approves of this revelation.
At the top of the peak, Evan and Sam see a bunch of standing stones, and Evan casts a bit of divination magic in order to figure out the purpose of the arrangement. He sees that there is ambient magic over the circle, and senses one of the stones teleporting before it does. He watches as the stones move around, and positions himself where the pattern suggests he should go, as it implies once the stones come into alignment, something will be revealed. Standing in the correct spot, within minutes the stones line up, and create a hole for him to look through, reminiscent of the one Dr. Boodle had shown them in order to peer into the storm; this is another Serpent’s Watch. Pushing his perception magic through the hole, he sees a large black snake-like creature moving within the clouds, hearing it roar, although he and Sam are the only ones able to hear it. He gets the sense that when they travel through the storm again, he will inherently know where it is, and how to avoid it. Evan and Sam discuss the creature, with Evan dubbing it a dragon, and Sam remembers Alexis, positing that this dragon will not be so nice. Evan takes out the Tome of Nimble Working, trying to find an image of what they’d just seen, noting that this dragon doesn’t resemble any of the creatures in the orrery. He finds several illustrations of what appears to be the creature’s mouth opening on chapter openings, and the long length of its body wrapping around sections of chapters. Alas, this is all he’s able to find, no depictions of bones or innards, which tells him that those that wrote the book were never able to kill one of these creatures. Sam remembers an interview she did with David Attenborough, and suggests that she and Evan should hang out with him. Evan seems to enjoy this idea, and Sam mentions that she’s tried to invite Evan to parties, and that he can ask her to hang out at any time.
Evan concedes that he’d love that, but that since Sam is so friendly to everyone, and that he has self-esteem issues, he’s been assuming that she’s only being nice to him because she's nice to everyone. However, he realizes that it was unfair of him to draw that conclusion, seeing as Sam has always gone out of her way to care for him. Sam expresses regret that he doesn’t like himself, but that she likes him regardless. He tells her that she’s kind, and that his anxiety has stopped him from reaching out when he’s wanted, because he loves her, but that he, being a magic murderer, possessed by demons, wouldn’t fit in her life filled with cool celebrities. Sam denies this, and that her celebrity friends and Evan are alike, except that they can’t do magic, nor would they come on this adventure with her. She implies that Ariana Grande can do magic, but that she can’t reveal that secret for her, and that she really does think Evan and David Attenborough would get along. All that said, she still cares for him deeply, and doesn’t compare him to them. Evan promises that he will try to find a way to make sense to be a part of her life, showing some regret over his choices in life that have led him to be hard to be around. He explains that when they arrived at Gowpenny, he didn’t know much about love, since it had been absent in his life, but he thought it would fix everything, but then when he achieved love, and things weren’t fixed, he still needed other structures in his life. Sam says she supports that need, but that she doesn’t need anything from him except to be Evan Kelmp, and that she will meet him where he is, and that he is worthy of that. Evan thanks her, and says he’s looking for “a reason to have a sofa.” Sam offers to crash at his place, but he says she wouldn’t like it. She says she would, and Evan asks if he can stay on her sofa, and she says literally any time he wants. She says she wants him in her life, and that her life is better for having him in it. He worries that his presence might freak out Ariana Grande, and Sam says nothing bothers her.
K and Jammer hear something whistle as it passes by their heads, and they see the underbrush nearby rustle. Another whistle passes them, and Jammer puts his wand to his head, willing himself to see in infrared to see what’s going on behind the bushes, although his spell is thwarted by those he’s trying to see. Acknowledging that this means they’re being attacked, Jammer pulls K behind the hoopty, and explains the situation, and K puts together it must be the cannibals on the island. K attempts to cast a spell to read their intentions, but their spell is also blocked. Jammer texts Sam that they’re being attacked, and shouts at their assailants, asking them what they want. No one responds, still getting spells thrown at them. Jammer manages to ward off one of the spells, but K begins to feel the effects of a calming spell, their fear quelled. As the spell sets in, they try to talk to their attackers again, standing up to try looking again, putting themselves in the line of fire, suggesting to Jammer that they might go over and talk to them. Jammer pulls them back down, careful not to aggravate their ribs. He asks K what’s going on, and K explains that one of the spells must’ve made them less suspicious.
Meanwhile, Sam and Evan get the text, and Sam puts together that they have to return to the hoopty as their friends are in danger, and Evan immediately unleashes his demons, jumping back on his broom and speeding back over to the hoopty, finding the ones threatening them. Jammer asks K to stay down, and they agree. Evan quickly picks up on where the aggressors are hiding, and reaches into his backpack and throws a flashbang grenade. Having been in a lot of fights, Evan puts himself in harm’s way to protect Sam, and feels a spell hit him, feeling the same sense of calm that K did. In the aftermath of the flashbang, they see about four human-shaped things scatter out of the bushes, although they are still invisible, and no one can quite make out what they are. Sam casts a spell, trying to get some of the leaf litter on the ground to stick to them, to make them easier to see. In casting the spell, however, it reacts well to her intention, and the leaves stick to the outlines of the wizards attacking them, and catch the light as though it’s mirrored glitter. Jammer runs at one of the figures, tackling them to the ground, using his wand to cast exhaustion onto them. The person under them stops moving, and he can hear a faint snore. In that moment, the spell on K runs out, feeling their aggression return, and they hop onto their broom, getting a better vantage point. They whip out their enchanted glasses, looking at one of the figures, willing them to see a deeply personal and embarrassing secret. They see the thought, “I bet Lemli’s not even interested in me at all anymore. There’s just no one else.” and realize that this must be Axelby, and call taunts after him about his wizard racism, and that his world has crumbled. He freezes in place, looking back at K, and the glitter allows them to see his posture deflate as he continues to run away. Evan puts together that he’s being mind controlled, but still can’t help but lean into it, suggesting that they go with the attackers and let them do what they want, so that they might explain how they’re doing the magic.
Sam asks Evan about the wisdom in “letting Axelby do whatever he wants” to her, which is enough to deter Evan, who casts a spell to break their hold on him. Succeeding in his spell, he regains his will to kill Axelby. Evan thinks back to the tournament, and how he’d demoralized the Rosemont student, to the point that he would never cast a spell again, and decides to replicate that feeling in their assailants. In order to do so, Evan detaches from his shadow, enabling it to absorb the three that are running, and Sam and Jammer aid in casting the spell. The shadow splits into four pieces, consuming all four, and the Misfits watch as their outlines go still, shock and confusion emanating from them. Sam’s glitter magic falls away, then the magic that keeps them invisible dispels, and they see Axelby and three unfamiliar wizards. They all seem to be wearing nice clothes, made shabby by time and wear, and empty leather holsters on their sides, that once held their wands. Evan’s shadow sinks into them, and burns the magic out of all of them. They no longer run, as they no longer fear for their lives, feeling as if they’re dead already. Jammer takes the holster off of the one that he’d put to sleep, who begins to back away from him. K suggests that he “read a book,” as there is information on how to live life without magic. The one they’re talking to realizes that he can’t fight back, since he no longer has magic, and agrees to find a book. Evan tells the group that it’s okay to hurt people that try to kill them, and that they don’t need to justify it. Jammer disagrees, and the one he tackled asks if he can go, and they dismiss him.
St. Dotto's[]
Jammer suggests that they leave, and K agrees, asking what Sam and Evan were doing. Evan tells them about the giant snake they saw, and K notes that there is one present in the orrery, on the outside of the islands and planets. Evan asks Tabby if he has any information on the creature, but there is no response. The four of them get back on the hoopty, which draws on their power, starting up. They all agree to head to the red island to fix K’s ribs, and as they take off, they hear the roar of the serpent. Jammer spots the creature close by, and directs them to land the hoopty as fast as possible, on the nearby red island. They manage to land without incident, and find themselves on one of the red islands, and immediately notice they don’t have a clear view of the sky, like on Seegenpelater. Parking the hoopty on a curated lawn, the group notes that the atmosphere is bright, warm, and still. Looking around, there's a series of buildings that remind them of structures in the Namp world, fairly modern, one of which has a sign labelled “St. Dotto’s,” and they see people moving around inside the buildings. Tabby wakes up, seeming more alert than he’s been, telling them that they are near Weugan, rendered as a wolf with an upside-down head, and represents an increase of energy, matter, and system, in short: amplification. Sam wonders if they’ve stumbled upon some kind of business, in the middle of the workday, and Jammer suggests that St. Dotto’s sounds like a hospital, and since they have someone injured, they should go in. K asks if there are magical saints, and Evan supplies that Dotto is at least not a Catholic saint, and Jammer deduces the existence of a wizard Christ and wizard Pope, before suggesting they not look too far into it.
Evan asks Tabby if he knows anything about the serpent monster in the storm, but Tabby’s other half says, “Ask Later.” Not wanting to leave him behind, Evan puts Tabby in his backpack while they’re exploring. Worried about the hoopty after their encounter on cannibal island, Sam suggests some way of securing the vehicle, and Evan offers her a pair of keys from the glove compartment that have an alarm remote. Using her stockpiled magical potential, Sam enchants the keys to act as a set of car keys would, but for the hoopty, locking it into place. The group heads to the entrance of St. Dotto’s, and note that it seems to be a converted monastery, as two people wearing lab coats rush out to greet them. One of them, Dr. Winnie Pants-Purcell, scans K magically, and states that they have a few broken ribs, and turns to Evan, stating that he has a corpse on him, and invites them all in. A large orderly puts K into a gurney, and Dr. Pants-Purcell comforts them, telling them to call her Winnie. K asks if they have socialized medicine, as they’ve had previous bad experiences with medical bills, and Winnie confirms that it’s free, and she understands, also being from the United States. As K gets wheeled away, Sam and Jammer keep to their side. Evan tries to join them, but is stopped by the medical staff, offering to take care of the dead body, but he declines, and goes with his friends. For whatever reason, the group is sprinting down the hallways, with Winnie repeatedly and dramatically telling K they’re going to be fine. Evan turns to Jammer and Sam and mentions that this seems like General Hospital, and Jammer mentions it’s like Grey’s Anatomy, a show his mom watches.
Winnie bursts through a set of double doors, and the group is mysteriously back in the entryway of the hospital, and pulls K up to a sitting position, who is now completely healed. K inspects their body, noticing that they have no trace of any of their injuries. Winnie shrugs off the running as getting their “steps in.” Evan muses about the magic of the island, noting that TV shows don’t show operations either. Sam realizes the magic of the place is amplification, and that it must feed into the intention. Evan asks Winnie to toss her hair, and she appears to go in slow motion. Jammer attempts to mimic it, but since he doesn’t have any hair, it doesn’t work, but Winnie grabs him by the cheek and assures him that he’s beautiful anyway, and Jammer suggests they stay on the island for longer. Evan asks Winnie if the island is called St. Dotto’s, or if it’s Weugan, and she seems to not understand what Weugan is, but confirms St. Dotto’s is a hospital, and that the magic on the island is helpful to healing and research, lending its inhabitants to combining medicine and magic. K informs Winnie that they also like to do medicine and magic, and she asks for K’s name, and says she would like to be their friend. Curious, Jammer opens a nearby storage closet, opening it and finds a couple having sex in it. K asks Winnie how to repay her, and she explains that she just wants to save lives, then go home and cuddle with someone she loves. K squeals, calling her Winnie, and Evan looks increasingly uncomfortable, telling the group he believes they’re in extreme danger. The others act as if he’s overreacting, and Winnie asks them if they’re hungry, telling them there’s a cafeteria.
Jammer runs off to find it, the others following after him. K chats with Winnie, apologizing for Evan’s standoffishness, but Winnie plays it off, and they bond over pointing out the tropes that Evan fulfills. Arriving at the cafeteria, they notice that it looks like a very nice restaurant, nothing like a hospital cafeteria, and that the medical staff all look beautiful. Evan inspects the salad, which is endive, rather than a lower quality leafy green, and concludes the place is cursed. Jammer insists on eating there, and Evan expresses concern that if this is merely “near” Weugan, then he isn’t sure what will happen on Weugan proper. K is completely charmed by the island, and Winnie returns to them with a truffle-covered pasta, beginning to ask them if they’re going to get food, before she’s interrupted by a blaring alarm. At the same time, all of the medical staff drop whatever they’re holding, cups, trays, food, and they look in the direction of the alarm, stating that it’s “a code crimson.” Evan is leery that the trays all dropped at the same time, and Sam declares that she wants to live on Trope Island.
