Description[]
Karl Cleaver is a professional adventurer and former member of the Pact of Kyburus. He is Katja Cleaver's father and ex-husband of Jana Cleaver. Karl does everything he does for his daughter, but is often either misguided in his actions, or oblivious to the fact that the thing she wants most is for him to be around.
He is decked out in dozens of enchanted weapons, including a polearm, a sword, an axe, a bandolier of daggers and a flintlock, all of which are powerfully enchanted. He also wears powerful magic armour and has magical tattoos that can activate to do battle-master manouvres and counterspells.
He cries exclusively big tears.
He has a minus 1 to wisdom.
Background[]
Karl was a standout pupil at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. He At some point became close friends with one Talcidimir Tallbreeze.
Both before and after his marriage, he hooked up a number of times, although he would later regret this. It is later revealed that a big reason for this was his discovery of his wife's true motivation in marrying him, which was to keep tabs on him for the Ministry.
Shortly after the birth of their daughter Katja, Karl discovered that Jana had been planted in his life by the Ministry of Adventuring as a covert informant and operative. This was a key driving factor in the adventurer's affair with the Superintendent of Schools and a pattern of infidelity that he tried to keep secret. When Karl accidentally revealed to his wife the nature of his suspicions, the Ministry reassigned Jana, leaving Karl to care for his beloved daughter alone.
He has died a lot.
Party of Seven[]
In Episode 1 of The Seven, he contacts Katja to inform her that he is going to kill a demon lord in the 888th layer of the abyss, and will probably not be able to make it to her graduation. He fails to realise the disappointment this causes her.
In or Out[]
Katja attempts to contact her father, but he doesn't pick up.
Belles of the Baronies[]
Katja once more calls her father, where he tells her he's inside of a giant snake the size of the world. She asks him about Tectonya Karkovnya, and he tells her that he knows her, but continually deflects the details of the question, mostly around how they met, and what he knows about her. Ostentatia casts command on him, and with a bane from Sam Nightingale, he fails the save, and spills the truth that he had hooked up with Tectonya multiple times, and that he had many affairs both before and after marriage.
He acknowledges that he hasn't done as much as he should have as a father, and promises to be better, as well as getting them an invitation to a masquerade on the Rombossa.
And Another Thing[]
Katja calls her father after the fight on the Rombossa to tell him that she killed her mother. Karl is currently travelling through the Abyss (the afterlife for evil and chaotic people), specifically in a maze that eats you. He is initially confused by what his daughter is telling him, until his ex-wife appears behind him and is quickly captured in a gem. Katja then explains that her mother appeared in the Abyss after she killed her in combat. Karl is concerned for his daughter, and finally explains his history with Jana. He reveals that she had secretly been a ministry informant sent to keep an eye on him from "up real close", due to his power and influence as an adventurer. After Katja's birth, he was informed of Jana's motives by Tectonya Karkovnya, which left him unsure of how to proceed and contributed to him starting affairs. When he finally couldn't take it anymore, he told Jana that he knew her secret and blew her cover. She was taken off his detail and abandoned their daughter to be raised by her father alone. He admits that he couldn't bring himself to admit this to Katja, because he didn't know how to tell his "perfect little girl" that her mother had chosen not to be part of her life. He tells Katja that while her mother may not have stayed with her, Karl wanted his daughter more than anything in the world.
Karl then invites Katja to join his adventuring party after graduation. When she says she has been trying to keep her own party together, he tells her she doesn't have to answer right then. He then leaves the call because the maze is still actively eating him.
Time & Space[]
While Karl does not appear in person in Time & Space, the Seven discuss him at breakfast with his past fling, Tectonya Karkovnya. She elaborates on his assistance with her work and (to Katja's horror) more...salacious aspects of their relationship.
I Fucking Love You[]
As the maidens return from their quest, Karl appears for his daughter's graduation. It's revealed that he quit his adventuring party to be more present for her (and took a memory charm so he can remember that all of her friends are not in fact named Meagan). Katja gives him the biggest hug in the world. He apologizes for asking her to join his own party, and instead offers to be the "man in the van" to support The Seven moving forward.
Sam Nightingale approaches Karl and his daughter to introduce her newly divorced mother Rebecca, with the intention of setting the two up. He offers Sam and Rebecca a place to stay in their guest house. While Sam's suggestion spell "date" seems to fly over Karl's head, it doesn't look like the two needed her intervention. He also offers to move the Luckstone house onto his property.
