Montgomery "Monty" LaMontgommery is Lou Wilson’s character in Cloudward, Ho!

Description[]

Same physical build as when we saw him earlier, big broad shoulders, big chest, a little bit more of a gut than he had in his younger years. His mustache has now grown to connect to his sideburns to complete the arc. His hair has gone completely gray. He now rocks a little bit of the George Jefferson kind of halo of hair around a bald spot in the center, wearing a three-piece tuxedo with a giant dire boar tusk just hanging in the center of his chest like a necklace.

Lou Wilson

Montgomery has big, broad shoulders and a big chest, though a bit more of a gut than he had in his youth. His mustache connects to his thick sideburns, and he sports a halo of completely gray hair around his bald head. He wears a giant dire boar tusk on a necklace.

Personality[]

Monty values nature and its creatures above everything else and is prone to leaving any company he’s in to spend time with animals instead. His first sight at a nocturnal zebra in Zood makes him want to stay immediately and he even forgets they are there to find Comfrey.

Background[]

Montgomery hasn't been in the sky in years because he is one of the world’s most successful authors and a renowned celebrity. He has written a popular series of entry-level adventuring books describing his explots with the Windriders. Titles include Naughty No-Goodniks at Nolly Pond, Showdown at Sassafrax Falls and A Strange Foe at Oh No Plateau. The early volumes are considered to be fun beach reads, but the series falls off in quality after the first several installments.

Due to the impression that the author "found his voice then lost it," some have surmised that a ghostwriter took over penning the book series. By Montgomery's own admission, he eventually stopped recounting actual adventures and started inventing entirely fictional ones. Montgomery’s publisher, Harry Ergh, fervently wishes for Montgomery to reboot the series, rewriting all the books to incorporate modern language, new themes and "a little more tits."

Monty has a fan club called the LaMontgommery Cog Scout Society.

History[]

In 1682, the other adventurers first meet Monty in the subterranean city of Bellenuit, speaking to senators. His impassioned speech makes senator Akabane withdraw his vote for the Widow’s Breath legislation to protect the forest. As Monty reconciles with the crew of the Zephyr, he initially claims he is no longer a wind rider, but when he hears Comfrey found Zood, he agrees to join them.

During their first encounter with Lord Kensington Mordecestershire, Monty calls out a reference to Pilby ‘71 to give the party a small head start, and then encourages Marya to take control of the Zephyr. He assumes control of one of the rotator guns, hovering over the city, and shoots it on the deck, harming Van and Max, but also their adversaries. He marks Lord Mordecestershire as his quarry, now being able to track him.

Monty and Olethra have a moment to chat while fixing the balloons of the Zephyr, discussing some of Monty’s books and Olethra’s relationship with her grandmother. The logbook Olethra took from Comfrey’s cabin reminds Monty of a night where he drew some possible creatures residing in Zood, like the nocturnal zebra.

After their trip to the South Pole station, Monty has conversations with Max (about Marya’s strange behavior and Van’s possible curse) and Daisuke (who admits he feels like didn’t do much down at the station and confesses that he misses Comfrey very much).

Trivia[]

  • Montgomery is reminiscent of the title character from the film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, who is himself an homage the real-life oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.
  • He gave one of his teeth to a boar who had given him its tusk to commemorate the time they spent together. (Unlike the tusk, the tooth did not grow back.)
