Description[]
"Yeah, I am Gerard of Greenleigh, a prince who is temporarily in the process of turning back into a frog. Was once a frog, then a handsome prince, turning back into a frog, sort of in the halfway point right now, so has a lot of human features, sort of a human build, but has big... Skin has turned green, is a little bit more slick and wet, and then big, bloodshot, human eyes, but that are spaced out like a frog's. So I think probably as you pull the blanket back, just a giant eye opens up." ― Brian Murphy
Appearance[]
Once a handsome human prince, Gerard has recently begun turning back into a frog. In this new form, he has been described multiple times as "monstrous". He has a human build and still has a lot of human features, but has large human-like bloodshot eyes which are spaced far apart like that of a frog. His skin is green, slick, and wet. His tongue is long and froglike, and can be used to catch flies, while his nose has disappeared entirely. After his reincarnation, he has only become more froglike. He has become noticeably more stout and what little hair he had left has entirely disappeared. After the trials of the Baba Yaga, he gives up his humanity and fully transforms into a massive frog.
Personality[]
Gerard is mostly polite, but has a tendency to be insensitive and selfish, suggesting that the war in his kingdom wasn't important, as he and his wife could hole up in their castle and be safe, no matter what happened outside. He also is in denial over his situation, insisting that everything will be fine, he is still handsome, and that his marriage is doing well. It also took him a long time to accept that his body was changing for the worse.
Background[]
Gerard was born as a human prince in Greenleigh. He was cursed as a child by the Fairy Godmother who considered him spoiled. She made it so he would have to live his life as a frog unless he found true love. Though Gerard initially talks about the curse as it was a good thing that made him a better person, it was largely a traumatic and lonely experience and he was disproportionately punished.
He eventually found true love with Princess Elody, breaking the curse, and turned back into a human.
At some point, Gerard used to fence with his cousins, acquiring a book of sword forms.
When the Times of Shadow fell upon the Neverafter, Greenleigh went to war with several other kingdoms. Due to Gerard's differing viewpoints on the war versus Elody's, their relationship began to deteriorate. This led to Gerard slowly transforming back into a frog. Eventually, while Elody was off fighting, their castle came under siege. Gerard escaped with some of the children, only to abandon them as he ran into the woods.
Neverafter[]
We first meet Gerard as he sleeps in a wagon on the Chandling Caravan. His rest is disturbed as his fellow passenger, Princess Rosamund du Prix, lifts the blanket up to get a good look at him. Despite the initial shock upon seeing each other, Gerard and Rosamund start to bond, even figuring out that they are cousins three times. Gerard insists that his frog-like form is temporary and that his marriage is going well, and explains that his castle was taken over and he is trying to find his wife, Princess Elody.
Boffit, one of the managers of the Caravan, knocks on the door to say that the Caravan is going to make a stop soon. Gerard gets offended when Boffit calls him a monster, and when Boffit questions Gerard's appearance, Gerard expresses his confusion as to why he is still a frog after finding true love. He also corrects Boffit when the latter says that Princess Elody married a frog, stating that they dated while he was a frog, after which they got married.
Later, Gerard and Rosamund introduce themselves to Pinocchio, Pib, Ylfa, and Timothy while the Caravan is setting up for a break. Gerard reasserts that his situation is temporary and that his wife still loves him. Despite Gerard and Rosamund falling for Pinocchio's claim of being a prince, their presence really throw off his and Pib's scheme, as they weren't expecting to encounter actual royalty, and they struggle to respond to Rosamund and Gerard's offer to stay in Pinocchio's castle for a few years. Gerard explains his curse to Timothy and speculates that he may have pinkeye when Ylfa brings it up.
When Gerard and Timothy talk to Cole, Gerard asks if Cole ever came across his wife. Cole recounts the story of how a calvary led by Princess Elody, clad in golden armor with a massive mace, arrived to help them defend Jubilee. Gerard, who never knew that Elody was so gifted in combat, reacts with shock.
As the travelers on the Caravan sit around the fire, Gerard is the first to notice fiddle music coming from Timothy's book. When Cole is sucked into the book, Gerard is immediately intrigued, seeing it as a possible way to break his curse. He gets a chance to try this out when the group is investigating the powers of the book. When Gerard touches it, his hand slowly turns from a frog back into a human, but the pages start to rot and a spherical depression appears in their center. Ylfa, concerned that Gerard is taking from the book, encourages Timothy to take it from him, but Gerard assures everyone that it's all good. Ylfa leaves the choice up to Timothy, who decides to slam the book shut. As Gerard pulls his hand out, he finds that it has gone back to a frog hand, much to his disappointment.
After Herr Drosselmyer tells the group that only they can save the Neverafter, Gerard immediately says, "So does the person who knows what's going on wanna say what's going on?" He also reprimands Pinocchio and Pib for sneaking off to speak to the Mirror. Over the course of the following conversation, Gerard speculates that the sphere that appeared in the book may be for the golden ball that initially brought him and Elody together when he was a frog. He is also the one to recount some royal gossip surrounding the kingdom of Elegy (the story of Cinderella).
As the party prepares to head into the Blackwood, Pinocchio reminds everyone that they may very well need to fight. Gerard says that he's prepared, and pulls out his book of sword forms. He demonstrates The Rabbit Rushed Onward and Two Eels For Supper as Ylfa tries to attempt them with her axe. Ylfa points out how skinny the man in the pictures in the book is, and Gerard states that he's by himself in all the images, so there's no proof that the forms work.
When they arrive at the ruined village in Elegy, Rosamund suggests to Ylfa that they could have a sleepover and do each other's hair. Pinocchio asks what hair Gerard had before the frog thing, and Gerard, offended, points out that he still has six or seven hairs left. He haughtily says that no one will be laughing when he's a prince again, and that they will in fact be excited by how handsome he is. According to him, he's the "second click prince" after Prince Charming.
As they prepare to retrieve the glass shard from the Fairy Godmother, Gerard is placed on Team Extraction along with Pinocchio and Timothy.
Relationships[]
Princess Elody of Greenleigh[]
Princess Elody is Gerard's wife. They met and began to date when Gerard was a frog, and, when they fell in love, Gerard was transformed into a human. Initially starting out happily, they began having marriage problems when Snowhold went to war with Greeleigh. Elody became very interested in strategizing for the war, whereas Gerard only wanted to hide in the castle to hold banquets and balls. Gerard later began to turn back into a frog, and Elody disappeared during the war. He then goes off into the Neverafter, knowing that her love would turn him back into the person he is meant to be.
They meet again in the vanquished Snow Queen's castle in Snowhold, Elody having joined a group of princesses called the Daughters of the Crown. When Snow White reveals the true intention of the group is to ultimately destory the universe, he attempts to tell Elody of their plan. However, she doesn't believe him, and, when he and the rest of Destiny's Children, he is able to see Elody crying as he rides away. Furthermore, during his trial by the Baba Yaga, when goaded by a vision of Rapunzel, he asks the Sword of Veritas if Elody still loves him. The sword says, "She cares for you deeply," Rapunzel laughing that that isn't the same thing. It's then that Gerard is willing to give up the lofty expectations of his wife, allowing her the freedom to write her own story instead of just being a part of his. This turns him fully into a frog.
During the battle with the Daughters of the Crown, Gerard pleads with Elody to stop her assault on the Canonade. However, Elody is lost in the despair, and asks him, "When you look at your destiny and you see that the most important part of your life was something that happened 'to' you, why would you fight to save that?" Gerard then tells her she hasn't had a chance to take control of her story yet, and that their lives going foward don't have to be limited to what traditionally has been written down since "things just don't end." Furthermore, he apololgizes for making her feel alone, and tells her that he would still be her friend, even though he knows she doesn't love him anymore. The weight of their story off of her, she is convinced to abandon the Princesses, and join his side in the fight.
The battle, ultimately won in the Destiny's Children's favor, comes at a cost, with Elody being knocked out, and Gerard full on dying. However, death has no permanance in the nature of stories, continuing to be spread even with their endings. So, being carried by the new incarnation of death, Gerard is able to tell his wife that he knew she was trying to protect him in the fight, and wants to give her something to help protect her in her next story since he has spent too much time relying on her to take care of him. He gives her the Sword of Veritas in order to help her tell her own story. She takes the sword, and tells Gerard she does, in fact, love him. He tells her he loves her back, and the Sword of Truth glows. The two then ride the wolf of death into the shadows.
Princess Rosamund du Prix[]
Gerard and Rosamund are cousins three times over due to frequency of incest in royal lineages. When they meet on the Chandling Caravan, they immediately bond over both having lost their kingdoms. As the only two royals in the party, Gerard becomes closer with Rosamund than with any of the other members.
Pinocchio and Ylfa Snorgelsson[]
It's possible that Gerard doesn't like children very much, as he is frequently annoyed by the underage members of the party. When Pinocchio questions why "Plight of the Honeybee" is in Gerard's sword book, Gerard gets very offended. Pinocchio and Gerard also argue several times about Toy Island, with the disagreement escalating when Pinocchio inadvertently allows Candlewick to attack Gerard. Despite this, Gerard and Pinocchio sem to have bonded by the end of the story, as Gerard frequently visits Toy Island with Pinocchio.
While Gerard and Pinochio often come to blows over the latter's reckless decisions, Ylfa gets on Gerard's nerves with her endless preteen energy. This is mainly seen when Ylfa asks Gerard not to get mad at her over something she's about to say. This results in an argument between Gerard and the rest of the party over whether Gerard promised whether to never get mad ever again.
Tom Thumb[]
Gerard believes that Tom is a dear friend and his boy after drunkenly unloading all of his marriage problems to the tiny man. He then promises to become Tom's 5:00 AM workout buddy, but never actual does. At one point, Tom has to put Gerard in his place, saying they don't have the deep type of relationship the frog thinks they have.

The Story of The Frog Prince (Reclaimed)[]
"Once upon a time, all of "The Frog Prince" stuff happened, then some other absolutely crazy shit happened, And then on the way out of divorce court, with his great friend/ex-wife, Elody, Gerard suddenly transforms into a handsome prince with all the powers of a frog, of course. He can still jump, can still eat stuff if he, if he needs to ever, because he does plan on continuing to adventure. And living the single life, of course, he needs to wake up at a resonable hour and work out with his good friend who wakes up at 8:00 AM in this world, and we work out, we work out at 9:00. And then we start work at 10:00. [...] I'm a divorced man getting ripped." ― Brian Murphy
While Rapunzel was cruel, Gerard acknowledges that she was right in pointing out that he didn't really have friends. So he keeps in touch with the other memebers of Destiny's Children. He gossips with Rosamund about the trials of being single and their terrible dates. With Timothy, he tries to gossip about the man's fatherhood of Jack. He drinks bubblegum and whiskey with Pinocchio, spending weekends at Toy Island. He goes to PiB for help to get his kingdom away from his parents who were perfectly fine with their son being turned into a frog for so many years (though he does try to hook Gerard up with one of Cinderella's stepsisters that he's been tasked to marry off). He also plays gin rummy and curses a lot with Ylfa.
During one of his adventures in the land of Tapestry, Gerard, along with the rest of the gang, come across a princess asleep in a glass coffin whom they recognize as Snow White. Rosamund promptly breaks open the coffin, giving CPR to get her to cough up the apple (taking issue with the thought of her having to be kissed to wake up). When she does, Snow White explains in confusion that she had thought that she needed to be kissed by her true love in order to wake up. Rosamund then explains to her that true love doesn't exist, but that that's good because now she has choice.
