Description[]

Queen Caramelinda is a resplendent and regal woman. She wears a queenly gown and her crown atop her long, caramel hair.

She is a very strict parent, as her husband, King Amethar, is very indifferent to and ignorant of royal and political affairs. She's pretty much the one who runs the kingdom and keeps it afloat. When her daughters cause trouble, they know they're fucked if their mother finds out, as she will not hesitate to loudly scold them and dole out a fair punishment.

Caramelinda is an intelligent woman and political strategist. She understands the dangers that present themselves to her family, and is well aware that even in times of peace, her family has enemies that lurk in the shadows. Perhaps as a result of the burden of being the sole navigator of a royal dynasty, Caramelinda can be quite cutting to her husband and daughters when they behave recklessly.

Background[]

Queen Caramelinda did not grow up in the privilege of the royal class. She used to be duchess of Meringue, a small province to the west of Castle Candy. During the Ravening War, she was promised and married to Princess Lazuli Rocks, which was a love match as well as a political marriage. Queen Caramelinda had learned how to cast arcane magic when she was together with Lazuli.

After Lazuli's death, Queen Caramelinda married King Amethar of House Rocks in order to keep the alliance. This was a primarily political match, and not one of any apparent love, and together they had two twin daughters, Princess Jet Rocks and Princess Ruby Rocks.

History[]

There is Strength in Sweetness[]

Queen Caramelinda is first introduced as she approaches King Amethar, Princesses Jet and Ruby, Sir Theobald, Chancellor Lapin, and Liam Wilhelmina as they return to the castle after retrieving the princesses from Dulcington. Ruby casts Prestidigitation to clean herself up in an attempt to minimize the imminent trouble she's about to be in, but her mother notices and comments on it. How did she get so dirty up in that tower studying? Jet and Ruby try to cover their tracks, saying they like more practical education "studying" with their father, but Caramelinda puts her foot down and scolds Jet for being disrespectful to the Chancellor after she calls him a bunny.

King Amethar attempts to defend his daughters, but Caramelinda quickly cuts him off, suggesting they talk about it later so that they can present a united front. Amethar reluctantly agrees. As Caramelinda continues to dole out punishment, the girls protest, claiming to be adults now, which is the Queen's last straw. She yells that it would be her greatest wish to behold her children as grown women, but all she's seen so far is rude, petulant children. The girls quickly quiet. She tells Amethar to meet her in her quarters in 10 minutes, as they have royal business to discuss, and asks Liam to go for a walk with her.

On their walk, Caramelinda talks with Liam about his position at Castle Candy. She makes sure he's comfortable and taken care of, but also admits that she knows his family's secret motives for having him there. She remarks that she would hate for him to be uncomfortable, and offers the comfort that it's not a permanent situation. While she's not allowed to request that he do so, lest she break the rules of the Concorde, she reminds Liam that if he did want to return home to the Great Stone Candy Mountains sooner, he could do so by getting married. Liam expresses his disinterest in marriage, saying he likes being alone with Preston.

In her quarters, Caramelinda speaks with Amethar about the events of that morning. Amethar tells her it's fun to hang out with his daughters and teach them all the tricks he used, as all the royal stuff can get boring. Caramelinda is thoroughly confused by a lot of what goes on in the castle, like Jet's tear-away underwear, or Limon throwing himself down the steps, as she didn't grow up in this kind of environment.

Relationships[]

Archmage Lazuli[]

Lazuli and Caramelinda loved each other deeply, and although their marriage may have been political, it was a marriage born of love. Lazuli taught Caramelinda magic, and years after her death, Caramelinda would still pray to Lazuli to help her get the spell right when performing magic.

Following Lazuli's death, Caramelinda shows signs that she continues to miss and grieve her wife, taking solace in resting her hand on books of Lazuli's, or sharing stories about Lazuli with Ruby, Liam, or Theobald.

King Amethar[]

Caramelinda had been married to Amethar's sister Lazuli during the Ravening War. After the death of Lazuli, Amethar and Caramelinda were wed.

Caramelinda has not viewed her marriage as a loving one, and is frequently annoyed and frustrated with Amethar, particularly at his lax style of raising their children or ignorance of political issues. She remarks during Safe Harbor that she loved Lazuli, but her marriage with Amethar was just politics.

Although their marriage was not one based on love, they did create a strong family together, and they supported each other in different ways when they could. Following the coup, and especially after the death of Jet, Caramelinda is cold towards Amethar, but they seem on the verge of reconciliation when Amethar persuades her not to take her anger out on Theobald. At the discovery that Amethar had married Catherine Ghee and had a child with her, Caramelinda's dignity is injured, and there is an added pain of a political reality of Candia improving under Saccharina's claim.

When Amethar learns of Catherine Ghee's death, and shares the information with Caramelinda, Caramelinda shares sympathy with Amethar, but is the only one to make the connection that Catherine Ghee died before Amethar and Caramelinda were married, meaning that their marriage was still valid, that Amethar was not an oath-breaker, and still the rightful king of Candia.

Jet Rocks[]

Jet and Caramelinda had an antagonistic relationship as might be typical between a strict parent and a rebellious teenager. Caramelinda and Jet would argue about the lessons that Jet and Ruby would skip out on.

Ruby Rocks[]

Similar to Jet, Ruby and Caramelinda had an antagonistic relationship as might be typical between a strict parent and a rebellious teenager. However, Caramelinda's criticisms of the twins were frequently directed at Jet in particular as the heir-apparent, or the twins as a duo, rather than Ruby in particular.

Following the death of Jet, Ruby experiences one-on-one time with her mother, and seeks her out for guidance. When the identity of Saccharina Frostwhip is discovered, Ruby expresses anger and resentment that Caramelinda is allowing everything around them to happen. Caramelinda reveals that she cannot remember when she last felt she had a handle on her own life, as she could not control Ruby, Jet, or Amethar nor stop them from making dangerous decisions.

Ruby was not aware that her mother was capable of magic prior to the events of At the Mountains of Sweetness, implying that Ruby rarely spoke to her mother of her past marriage to Lazuli or her mother's skills beyond running the kingdom. Likewise, Caramelinda explains to Ruby that she was planning on teaching them magic after they had matured, but was afraid of giving them more tools they could use to run away.

Sir Theobald Gumbar[]

Theobald had been a ward of Caramelinda's wife, Archemage Lazuli prior to and during The Ravening War. Theobald remarks in hindsight that he had felt childishness and jealousy towards Caramelinda, but it had faded long before the events of A Crown of Candy.

Caramelinda and Theobald have a neutral relationship at the beginning of A Crown of Candy.

Their relationship becomes strained and fractured when Jet dies. After her death, Caramelinda berates Theobald and orders him to not let the death of her daughter happen a second time. After talking with Amethar, Caramelinda attempts to apologize to Theobald, but Theobald tells her that she does not need to apologize, as he serves and loves her family.

Liam Wilhelmina[]

Caramelinda seems to be fond and/or portective of Liam, perhaps in part to their parallel positions of being political tools within House Rocks. She advises him that he might return to his family and end his wardship by getting married. When Liam expresses that he is not always sure whether or not people hate him, Caramelinda tells him to tell her if there's anyone who treats him poorly, and assures Liam that she does not hate him.

Saccharina Frostwhip[]

Caramelinda shares comradery with Saccharina in that they have both lived a life they did not ask for.

Learning of Saccharina's existence and claim to the throne strains Caramelinda's relationship with Amethar further than it had been prior to the coup. Caramelinda retreats to limiting her interactions with others to her daughter Ruby, and insists on privacy.

However, Caramelinda recognizes and acknowledges that there is a reality in which Saccharina's claim to the throne of Candia may result in improvements for Candia, which is a bittersweet realization.

Saccharina attempts to converse with Caramelinda when opportunities present themselves, such as sharing that she had a commemorative mug from the marriage of Caramelinda and Lazuli while Saccharina was a child at the nunnery. Saccharina also asks for consent before casting a spell on Caramelinda, and casts an ice dome which acts as a personal protective fortress around Caramelinda so she might hold onto the spell, a bonfire within the dome to keep Caramelinda warm, and a minor illusion of a sweater.

When Caramelinda and Ruby argue, Saccharina will give a "knowing look" to Caramelinda in consolation.

Quotes[]

There is Strength in Sweetness[]

  • Why are all of Jet’s underpants tearaway?!
  • What’s wrong with you? Who did I marry!
  • I’m glad you have, after much convincing, seen fit to do what you must do.

Safe Harbor[]

  • Your sisters knew. Which means that Lazuli knew. [Amethar: yeah, she knew before I knew I guess, but -] You not telling me makes sense. Your sisters probably had a plan when they were alive, and when they were dead you would probably be too scared to figure out what to do. So like a child you thought it would go away on its own. Lazuli not telling me... that... that hurts. Because Lazuli I loved with all my heart. And this (pointing at Amethar) is just politics.

At the Mountains of Sweetness[]

  • I have one daughter left. Maybe instead of summoning this reflection of your failure, you can see to it you devote yourself to not letting it happen a second time.
  • When you have failed as completely and totally as I have, and are as afraid as I am that the weight of that failure will destroy you, you will panic and try to put that on someone else.
  • I can't remember the last time I felt like I had a handle on my own life.
  • You're a woman grown, and now the secret is revealed: All the crowns on all the heads of all the kingdoms of the world... don't know. Don't know what they're doing, don't know what's going to happen next, how to stop it.

Trivia[]

  • Her name is a reference to caramel. It is also possible that "linda", spanish for "beautiful", is a reference meant to emphasize her beauty.
  • She is canonically bisexual.
  • It was said that Caramelinda could have absolutely defeated Calroy Cruller
  • Her mini was sold as part of the Dimension 20 A Crown Of Candy Auction for $4,011
