Saprophus is the mushroom kingdom, located underneath Calorum. It is seemingly ruled by the semi-sentient force the Mycelium.
Description[]
Saprophus is unknown to almost all of Calorum. During the Ravening War, it appeared to be allied with the The Fellowship of Destiny's Architects in the goal of causing war and death above among the other kingdoms of Calorum. Saprophians seem to communicate by a form of telepathy through the consumption of spores. The Mycelium seems to be the life force of Saprophus, and is regarded as the "Heart of the World" by Bishop Raphaniel Charlock. It is alternately called the "Heart of the Mycelium" and the "Heart of Ice" by its inhabitants.
Government and Religion[]
Saprophus seems to be controlled by the Mycelium, which exerts its will through Saprophians. For thousands of years, the mycelium has acted, not just an underground society, but as the third part of the cycle of Calorum. The Bulb gives life and light, the Hungry One consumes and gives shadow, and the Mycelium is what brings the cycle back between the two. It is the balance between the three forces that allows life to continue.
Trivia[]
- Matthew Mercer implied that the Saprophians that currently exist beneath the ground were perhaps not the first, and that previous fungal beings built many of the structures in Saprophus (including the building the final fight of The Ravening War was set in).
