The Sweetening Path is an animistic religion originating from Candia. It is over 2.5 thousand years old.
Description[]
The Sweetening Path is an old religion that worships the spiritual guardians and protectors of Candia. It is animistic, with a pagan element to it where everything is represented by a spiritual dimension. There are hundreds if not thousands of such spirits, including the Sugar-Plum Fairy, who is possibly the greatest of them.
Old Glades and Standing Stones[]
Part of the Sweetening Path pertains to Old Glades found in the forests of Candia. These glades are spread throughout the kingdom, but are a little more concentrated to the north.
Within the Old Glades are purple standing stones covered in runes, like tall plinths, made of a sugar-crusted plum stone. Ceremonies take place here, though it is unclear what kinds of ceremonies these are, or what they entail. At least one involves tea cups.
Sugar Huts[]
Sweetening Path standing stones are often found in the center of Candian villages, something which Bulbian missionaries are not very tolerant of. Instead, citizens build lovely little rustic wooden structures around them, known as sugar huts. In this way, it becomes something like a covert temple, but only to those passing through. To inhabitants of the village and worshipers of the Sweetening Path, their existence is open knowledge.
History[]
The Sweetening Path is first mentioned when Liam Wilhelmina comes across an Old Glade in the peppermint forest on the way back to Castle Candy. This encounter is preceded by the twinkling of chimes as Peppermint Preston sleeps and dreams in his arms, but it's unclear whether this is the cause of the Old Glade's appearance. Liam investigates a tea cup left on the scene from a ceremony, but accidentally shatters it, and he quickly runs away.
Chancellor Lapin Cadbury visits the Old Glade later that day when he senses that something important has broken.
