The Fall of New York City is the first episode of season 7, The Unsleeping City: Chapter II.
Introduction[]
"We descend on a blazing hot summer's day, over the New York City skyline. The pavement’s so toasty, you could fry an egg on it. And right out of the gate, I am going to throw a curve ball at one of our PCs. You know it, you love it because check it out! Over the hot skyline… We noticed that we don't… There's a lot of things we do see and don't see. The streets are covered in the street signs that we are familiar with, but the style of fashion is a little bit different. We see someone walking down the street with a huge boombox on their shoulder playing music. And indeed, picture if you will, on the bottom of your screen and your mental camera, a little 1994 comes up."
Synopsis[]
In 1994, The Great Dragon of Bleecker Street, who has fallen ill, bestowed upon a 30-31 year old Kingston Brown the title of Vox Populi
In present day, in their clocktower apartment, Ricky Matsui and Esther Sinclair get ready for their days, Ricky at the Homeless Outreach Center he works at and Ester at Clinton Hill Chantry.
Pete Conlan, now working at Uncommon Knowledge, is awaiting the end of his shift, because he has a meeting for his new apartment. While waiting for his coworker Zee to relieve him, a young, questioning child and their teacher returned from a school trip as the child, revealing her name to be Amanda Daniels or Dee, to retrieve their school bag. They’re fascinated by Pete who tells them it’s never too early to “create your own reality.” They leave with their teacher upon finding their bag, and on their way she giddily says bye to Pete.
Back on Staten Island, Sofia Lee is sharing an apartment with her mother, Marie. After an argument with her mother, she took her car that she stole from her brother, and went to go see her “psychic” Lady Anastasia for a tarot reading.
lga Lisowski, or Lady Anastasia soon had her reading interrupted by Yagdash Scrovich to drop off drug money. She begins to speak to him in Polish and it is revealed that the psychic work is a front for drug dealing and she scolds Yagdash for interrupting her reading, on account of the business itself needs to run undisturbed to not tip off authorities. The mention of cops spooked him, and he pulled out a gun, running into the bathroom and accidentally shooting himself in the rear. Iga offers Sofia a free reading and asks her to close her eyes and ears, before removing Yagdash from her establishment, recommending her see Dr. Lugash. After finishing her appointment with Sophia, she goes to get snacks for her daughter’s sleepover after being asked to be “normal” for the night and get “real snacks” as opposed to making polish snacks.
We move to Queens, where the Queens Center Mall is being set up to be demolished. Cody Walsh, former manager of the Hot Topic inside, causes a stir when he throws a shuriken at the sign marking the mall being torn down for a Gladiator complex. After a brief altercation, Cody pulls a prop buster sword from Final Fantasy VII and it is immediately confiscated by the authorities. He goes home with plans to come back that night to take some of the Hot Topic’s remaining merchandise.
Back in Harlem, Kingston awakens from pleasant dreams next to his ex-wife, now girlfriend Liz Herrera who’s just starting off her morning. She’s tells his she’s working on a case against the Confetti Crime Family with the help of David Kugrich. After a moment reminiscing on their friend, David’s father Kugrash who sacrificed himself to help save the world New Years Eve three years ago, she told Kingston that she wouldn’t be able to make it to the Islanders game that he got tickets to. Saddened by the news, Kingston understands, happy to still have their Sunday walk. She leaves for work, and Kingston calls Pete, inviting him to the game and they decide to get pupusas.
Kingston, taking this as an opportunity to walk his bulldog Bruce, makes his way to see Pete, briefly stopping by Cosmo‘s on the way. When they meet up, they embrace, exchanging “Good to see you”s and go inside. It’s said that Pete moved out of Kingston’s apartment not too long after the events of the first season as Kingston was repairing his relationship. They begin to catch up, talking about how far they’ve come. Kingston asked Pete if he ever persued a relationship with Rowan, who is currently running her faerie court, and Pete reveals that they did briefly, but it didn’t end particularly well. Pete asked how things are going with Liz and Kingston gushes about how great things have been going despite not being out adventuring with the others. Pete happily congratulates him and Kingston assures him his time will come, before they depart for their separate appointments.
Pete gets on the bus on his way to his viewing for his perspective apartment, going through his phone looking at old texts with Rowan and Priya‘s Instagrams, running into her engagement announcement.
Kingston on his way back home notices an electronic store that an old friend of his, Reggie used to have that closed down. He texts him to check in and he gets a strange reply that quickly vanishes, before Reggie responds apologizing for leaving unannounced and saying that he was bought out by a phone company and decided to use that money to move. Kingston makes his way back home.
Pete makes his way to the apartment and meets his prospective roommates Nasir and Josh who briefly explains the goings on, before their other roommate Cody arrives, lamenting the loss of the mall. He also brings up a previous house vote to mount sais in the share living space since another roommate should call for a new vote in his opinion. Nasir quickly shuts down the prospect and continues Pete’s tour.
Cody makes his way back to the mall later that night to sneak in and take a few things from the now closed Hot Topic. While amidst his heist he comes across a book that sets free the devil Bazathrax. Cody immediately offers to sell him his soul in exchange for powers that he would use to seek vengeance for the closure of the mall, assuming he’s Lucifer. Bazathrax, more then willing to capitalized on this, creates a contract on the back of a Roman Reigns poster, and Cody signs over his soul. The fiend says he’s going to scope out the new environment and tells Cody that he will call him when the time comes.
Pete, having elected to move in that night, returns with an air mattress and settles in when Cody returns, and Pete senses that Cody has recently been inducted into the Unsleeping City. Pete reveals his powers and Cody jumps to the conclusion that Pete has signed away his soul as well. Pete, confused and off put, tells Cody to come to his room and explain what happened.
Iga has returned to her home and her husband Oskar tells her that their daughter Jessica’s sleepover is going smoothly and that they need blankets, she runs to her room and brings blankets down to the sleepover before returning to her bedroom and noticing that a chest in her room is askew. She calls her pseudodragon Misiek, who is scared off by strange goings on with the chest, that’s going haywire, glowing brightly and slamming violently into the floor and ceiling. When the chest finally halts, it begins to change. The engraved trees that were once there have become buildings resembling skyscrapers and atop them are Ricky Matsui and Sofia Lee.
