Introduction[]

Synopsis[]

Boarding the Ship[]

Lord Kensington Mordecestershire is a gaunt man with waxy skin stretched tightly over his skull. His face has a pinched look as a result of his noble breeding. He boards the Zephyr with a docking party of men clad in mechanical tank suits. Marya and Montgomery observe the suits constantly feed their occupants "The Queen's Smog", which enables them to breathe when not in polluted areas. The Queen's Smog is a side effect of the "Widow's Breath", a chemical which makes flight much easier and more financially viable but has toxic side effects which Mordecestershire glosses over.

The crew of the Zephyr argue over the repossession of the ship. In an attempt to get Mordecestershire to leave, they feign that Montgomery has a slow-progressing disease which results in full organ failure after 40 years. Mordecestershire doesn't buy it. He clarifies that he doesn't intent do fully reposes the ship, but pass on a message from Gotch's father expressing displeasure at his son's thievery. Mordecestershire then informs the party that he will go into the Captain's quarters and take what can be repossessed.

The Lord Kensington's goons fan out. As they do so, Marya nonverbally casts a spell over the door to the captain's quarter's locking it. Several goons begin to crowd around the door, trying to make their way in. Another goon heads for Olethra's mechsuit, hidden under a tarp. Olethra immediately spots this, considers trying to puncture the suit and play it off like an accident, but decides it's impossible. She approaches the man, and convinces him to follow her to "the Captain's quarters", and leads him away from the mech. Daisuke follows the goons around with his eyes, getting a layout of the land in case things go south. Montgommery looks around and realizes escape is impossible. The highways are too narrow and Mordecestershire's ship has them boxed in. Van approaches the other crewmen and orders them to casually get to their battlestations. Olethra hides. Meanwhile, Maxwell has a conversation with Mordecestershire. When asked, Maxwell lies and says he has no idea where or what MacLeod was doing, stresses twice that the ship is out of Imperial jurisdiction and thus neither it nor its contents can be taken, and that threatens him with his closed, bruised fists. Lord Kensington tells Maxwell that he is not doing anything illegal, and that he is not after the vessel itself, but the contents. Maxwell says that he has searched the vessel and couldn't find anything. He then puts his gloves on and makes a conciliatory gesture, asking why they have to behave antagonistically. He asks Mordecestershire if he knows anything about "Fuhuljah" or "Ramansu Power Station". He is confused by the question and walks away. As he does so, the goon following Olethra notices she's missing. As Lord Kensington walks away, Daisuke says "Grab him!" and battle commences.
