Synopsis[]
The Sylvan Sleuths decide to split up to accomplish their unfinished business before the end of the night.
Buckster bursts through the front door of Loam Hall, shouting that he has solved the mystery and serving as a perfect distraction for the remaining houseguests and crooked constables alike. He holds court in the parlor, weaving a story with all the details the group has learned thus far and pinning the crime on the Red Herring in the room to deflect the attention from his companions. This permits the Vicar and Daisy to sneak inside the house undetected, with the Vicar heading in search of Mrs. Molesley and Daisy headed towards the tower. She finds Prof. Simon Shellcrest, Lawrence Longfoot, and Lord Eoighan McCrae unconscious in the first level of the tower, and is told by Longfoot that the Tufting Meadows Constabulary have been brutally interrogating houseguests as part of their search for Sylvester Cross and his accomplices. She continues upwards in search of Connor McCabbage.
At the same time, Sylvester is painstakingly climbing up the tower from the outside using a knotted rope. He sustains minor injuries as he climbs due to his bad hip and the powerful storm raging outside, but he arrives at the tower window at the same time as Daisy arrives inside. The two find Connor McCabbage, alive but very emaciated and weak after having been kept in this tower for nearly three months.
Lars heads to the docks and takes out one of the crooked constables. After posing as a ghost, they are let into the boathouse by Lady Lucretia Brockhollow, who is standing guard over the bound and gagged forms of Constance Brockhollow and Dr. Corbin Magpie. Through their conversation with the Brockhollows, Lars learns that Squire William Brockhollow had planned for his entire family to disappear this evening in order to appease the person to whom he had transferred all his debt. Constance had in fact succeeded in convincing her father to drop the ruse and seek Sylvester Cross's help, but before he managed to extricate himself and his family from the dire situation he had put them in, he was truly killed. The group storms out of the boathouse in the direction of Loam Hall.
Gangie returns to the elevator, taking it from the docks level up to the kitchen wing. Buckster's ruse is still in full effect, and as a result, no assistance is provided for the lone constable who is posted on the elevator. Gangie gets the jump on him and kills him by driving his thumbs through his eyes into his brain. He sneaks to the bedroom wing in search of Mrs. Molesley and joins forces with the Vicar to defeat the constable who is menacing her in her bedroom. They notice that, although she is frightened by the storm, the lightning strikes outside her window do not trigger her epilepsy. They conclude that her epileptic fit at the moment of the murder must have been caused by an artificial flash of light, and realize that Lawrence Longfoot's camera must have been the source.
