We're the Heroes is the fourth and final episode of season 9, Misfits and Magic.
Synopsis[]
Nurse Stichnit and Evan talk about rescheduling his appointment to something soon. Stichnit agrees reluctantly, saying that he wants Evan to go to Bibble's Bog, a free day in a nearby town. Stitchnit leaves, quickly waving to his daughter Maddy.
Evan takes the pilot program for a walk and reveals what the appointment is for. Hearing this, Dream says that he would lose all of his memories, if he lost his powers with this procedure. Evan states that this is fine with him, as long as they have the memories of him. He also says how his happiness doesn't matter. They all try to reason with him, and get him to stay. Evan starts saying that he is useless to the rest of the party, and how he is dragging the rest of the group down. They continue to argue, and Evan gets a note from Nurse Stichnit, saying "Whenever you're ready." Headmistress Philtrum finds the party and tells Evan that she was coming to escort him to "finish his stay", but Evan notes that she looks a little too pleased.
While they go down to the common room to 'retrieve Evans belongings,' Evan summons his shadow, and threatens it into getting free weights from a Planet Fitness that Jammer frequented in Chicago. Sam feels like she missed out on a really big opportunity. Evan's shadow retrieves the weights, and when Jammer goes to see them, he begins to cry.
Evan rethinks his decision to have the procedure at all, and is told by Philtrum to go and tell him. He tries to send a paper airplane, but Philtrum burns it without looking.
Evan tells Philtrum about Tallulah attempting to cast a spell on him, and Dream tells her that Sam was recording the whole match. Philtrum requests that Sam shows the footage, and Sam goes down to her office. Sam sees notes left behind by Dream's animals, such as "TRUST US" written by spiders. Sam does not actually have footage of this, however, as she was on the field playing at the time. She tries to buy time by distracting her with her antics, and Philtrum crumbles her phone. Philtrum says that Tallulah is a model student, as well as the trio, which is why she tasked them with watching over the pilot program. Philtrum asks if she wants to lodge a formal complaint, threatening that Fergus will be placed on probation as well if she does. Sam lodges the complaint. She spends the remaining time explaining the plot of Terminator to the headmistress.
Meanwhile, at nurse's office, the rest of the group tell an obviously delighted Stichnit that Evan would not be going through with the procedure, and they voice their suspicions on Philtrum. Dr. Boodle explains how he doesn't think Philtrum would hurt a student on purpose, and Stichnit says that she was given this responsibility for a reason. Stichnit reveals that if Evan went through with the procedure about his magic, the entire pilot program would have been sent back to America.
Bibble's Bog[]
Next Saturday, the group travels to Bibble's Bog, where the Founder's Festival is happening. They visit the Questing Beast, where Sam meets Fergus, Evan buys a drink for Dream and Jammer meets Cleo. Cleo gets Jammer a drink, and they head outside to talk. Fergus and Sam get drunk, and Fergus reveals that the headmistress wanted them to force the pilot program out of the school by being rude to them, and Fergus got mad at her for that. Evan and Dream listen in on the conversation, and parse that anyone can learn magic and that instead of a secret community of people with inborn natural abilities protecting themselves through a clandestine secret society, what we instead have is a possible worldwide resource of limitless power being hoarded by people who could absolutely share it with any and everyone.
Cleo tells Jammer that there is a tournament in give or take an hour between multiple schools, and each school gets two teams. She, Fergus, Digsby and Tallulah are on one team, and the pilot program are on the other. She says how they should have known about this all term, and how they were preparing for this the entire year. She says how the entire school is "trying to fuck them." Cleo leaves to sober up Fergus, and they have a cheer of "Chimeron on three, family on six, Muggle on nine." They sober up Sam, and fly off to the grounds for the tournament.
First event: Transfiguring[]
The first event has already started by the time they arrive, and the objective is to create a dress, shoes, carriage, horsemen and horses. Dream summons her magical creatures, and they create a glow in the dark dress, a red tesla, and four stallions with black and rose gold bridling. Fireworks go up as they are the first to complete their task. Dream says she will start going by K and is experimenting with they/them pronouns on top of she/her, as the group lifts them up. The trio finishes fourth, and Cleo mouths to Jammer that he "would look good in that dress."
Second event: Duel[]
Sam and Evan are the two chosen to fight. Sam's duel is respectful, where both her and her Nordic enemy take turns to try and disarm each other, not trying to maim or deadly injure either. While everyone else finished their fight already, Sam takes his wand from his hand and snaps it accidentally. He surrenders and Sam wins.
The next duel is Evan, who has what is essentially a fan club of full grown adult wizards, cheering him on saying that "He's gonna do a murder!" His enemy is someone from Rosemont, who is told to stand down and surrender if he values his own life. And Evan says "If you're not gonna concede, what do you want me to tell your family?" Evan's opponent refuses, saying that prestige and money are on the line if he doesn't fight.
As his opponent prepares his attack, Evan absolutely unleashes an absolutely crazy amount of magic, so much so that he has to fight to control himself.
Evan blasts the kid into the underworld long enough to see his funeral, all of his weeping family members, and the completely altered lives of the people he cares about as he throws his life away; and then, after he has wrinkles around his eyes and his hair has gone stark white, he wrenches him back from the underworld and shouts, "For prestige? People care about you!"
The kid snaps his wand after seeing this, and it is noted he will never cast a spell again.
After the kid explains whatever happened with Evan, Rosemont drops out of the tournament entirely.
Third event: Chase[]
It is then explained that contestants have to chase down a dragon and the captain of the team must bring back a single scale from the dragon's chest. Once the single scale is taken, the tournament is over, winner takes all.
Cleo is explaining this to the misfits and, while they are talking, Tallulah casts a spell on her. Evan notices and notifies her, and Dream dispels the magic. Cleo goes back to her group and starts an argument with Tallulah over her casting that spell. The headmistress soon after gathers attention, and begins the event.
The group gets to the dragon first and Sam convinces her to give them the scale, if she puts up a chase to potentially get a callback. They all continue flying with Alexis, Evan, K, and Sam work on stopping the trio, who have just knocked down the other team playing. Evan sends a concussive blast at the trio, and K puts Digsby in a bubble. However, while this is happening, Tallulah casts a necrotic spell on Alexis, and she goes down. Jammer decides to share the necrotic energy and strain by making Alexis on the team, something that Sam sees by the threads, and Sam joins in on sharing the load. K and Evan work together, and with their power combined grab Tallulah's wand from her in a blue bubble, and make a quest for her to do 3 trials to obtain back her wand.
While this is happening, Fergus tries to help take some of the load off of Sam and Jammer, to help Alexis, and becomes part of the team as well.
Epilogue[]
Jump cut to end of year.
Fergus is dating Sam, and Sam is running empowerment sessions with Chimeron, and gave kids hope and confidence that they weren't just the rejects.
K is officially dating Evan and found an in-between of their old self and new self, the emo and princess, that they really like. She's doing well in school, and binges Crunchyroll and Netflix on the one remaining phone they have left.
Evan is the happiest he has been, and goes into all the libraries and starts uploading PDFs of them to a database for when they reveal magic to the world. He finds out who were the people doing marches to give magic to the rest of the world; sought political allies in England and told them who Philtrum is, and how she dislikes NAMPS doing magic. Dr. Boodle becomes the headmaster.
Jammer has set up some sport courts and areas in the school, and helps students at the school stay fit.
