"You always gotta be kind, you always gotta try your best and there is no sense in being a fuckin' pushover!" ― Wilma and Digby Thistlespring to their son, Gorgug Thistlespring
Wilma and Digby Thistlespring are gnome tinkerers and the adoptive parents of Gorgug Thistlespring.
Featured Episodes[]
Description[]
They are incredibly optimistic and are very genuine and honest with Gorgug. Though they find it hard to relate to him since he is a half-orc, they do their very best and use every opportunity they get to turn a negative situation into an analogy and life lesson. Both Digby and Wilma encourage their son to sing whenever he feels negative emotion, and often pull out their instruments, a ukulele and harp respectively, when they feel it's appropriate.
Digby is bald and has muttonchops. In their workshop, he wears goggles, and Wilma wears a bandana around her head. They both wear aprons and little pointed shoes.
The Thistlesprings (especially Digby) have a tendency to misinterpret Gorgug's concerns, and frequently give him advice about sex and STIs when he is asking about much more innocent topics.
Background[]
Pre-Campaign[]
In the Boys Night one shot it is revealed that Digby and Wilma met in their freshman year of college. This is stated by Digby to be the reason why he doesn’t have any friends: because he fell in love so hard that he never wanted to hang out with anybody else.
While not much is known about them, in "Fearful Symmetry", the sphinx that Gorgug has to pass through in the forest of the Nightmare King mentions the siblings and parents of Digby and Wilma. It’s implied that the entire Thistlespring clan was once very close and lived together in the family tree but had a falling out when Digby and Wilma chose to adopt Gorgug. When a family member had suggested that the half-orc would grow up to be nothing but violent and full of rage, Digby and Wilma kicked the rest of their family out and decided to raise him own their own.
Freshman Year[]
The Beginning Begins[]
On Gorgug's first day of his freshman year at Aguefort Adventuring Academy, they come into his room to find him awake earlier than usual, as he's broken his bed in his sleep again. Digby wastes no time in fixing it with Mending, and they impart their first piece of advice of the season. They have trouble relating to him when he says it feels like his insides are boiling when he gets mad, so they suggest that, if he ever feels that way at school, to sing a song about it to make the anger go away:
"♫ When you feel a little mad; It's probably because you really feel sad; Just remember your mom and dad; And then you'll start to feel real glad. ♫"
As Gorgug leaves for school, Wilma gives him a little tin flower and some advice on making friends.
After the Afterlife[]
Wilma and Digby pick Gorgug up at school after the battle with Doreen and the Corn Ooze, in which he died. They attempt to comfort him, but as neither of them have died before, they have trouble relating to him as usual.
In Episode 5, when the party go to them about the power source, they both show extreme pride in Gorgug after he introduces them to the rest of the group.
In Episode 13, they show even more pride about Gorgug's date with Zelda.
In Episode 14, Frank Dunford apparently commissioned them to build the power source for the new arcade.
In Episode 15, they travel to Strongtower Luxury Apartments with Gilear and are told to leave numerous times by him. They also sang a song to him which made Gilear tear up. Later, when their home is being attacked, they are seen wielding dangerous machinery like a laser cannon and spinning gyros. They then become more upfront with their son and tell him he should never be "a fuckin' pushover." They then travel off to the border to deal with an invading force of Kalvaxus's army in their bad-ass tank.
In Episode 17, it is revealed who Gorgug's biological parents are, and both Wilma and Digby are told in the epilogue to be keeping in contact with them regularly. Despite finding out who his biological parents are, Gorgug still appreciates Wilma and Digby as his parents too.
Fantasy High LIVE in Brooklyn[]
As Gorgug wakes up for school, Wilma and Digby tell him how proud they are that he hasn't died and gone to hell at all that year. They also comment on his relationship with Zelda, repeatedly offering their assistance should he have any questions. He doesn't have questions. They give him an enormous binder full of sex education for him to reference (complete with glossary) when they're not around.
Sophomore Year[]
At the beginning of spring break sophomore year, Gorgug and the Bad Kids (sans Fig and Riz) visit the Thistlespring Tree hoping to borrow Wilma and Digby's van, as it can carry more passengers than Jawbone's car can. Instead of letting him borrow it, they offer to sell it to him to use as his own adventure-mobile.
Advice and Life Lessons[]
"Sometimes a thing gets broken, and when you rebuild it, it's stronger for it, you know? A lot of things are like that. You put a sword in a steel forge, you gotta beat the hell outta that thing to get it nice and hard and sharp, you know? Breaking things isn't bad." ― Digby
"Makin' pals is just like making a flower, you know? [interrupted by Gorgug] With a flower, you think, 'Hey, now what should that thing look like?' and 'How would I make it?' and 'What would I do?'. You're thoughtful, and then you're real careful with it, and then you put the work in and you put the elbow grease in and you do it with love the whole time. And if you just go be yourself, be your great, good self with your great big heart, I just know you'll make some friends, bud." ― Wilma
"Everything's just like something else!" ― Wilma
"You know, it's not that I've died, but you're not alone. So I don't wanna ever say that I haven't gone through something you've gone through." ― Wilma
"I will say this: You know I hope you always keep your word, and I hope you never disappoint a partner of yours, and if you've made a commitment to a partner, that's your word and you have to be honest with them. If you do commit an act of infidelity, you gotta wrap it up! Okay, because you start sleeping around, one person becomes three, it becomes ten, and that's how people get HPV, bud!" ― Digby[[source]]
Trivia[]
- In Starstruck Origins with Elaine Lee (Part 1), Brennan admits "there may be some loose inspiration in the Thistlespring parents for how I was raised", and has at some point or another called his mother Wilma Thistlespring.
