Description[]

"I'm Ylfa Snorgelsson, but most people call me Little Red Riding Hood. I am sort of a bug-eyed preteen and a total grandma girl. I think I've got matted, unkempt, braided pigtails. I'm wearing men's hunting boots. I've got a huge ax slung over my shoulder, and I think I've got dirt, dark, thick dirt crusted under my fingernails. And I'm here because Mother, as I knew him, used to read stories to some of the local kids in my village and then when things went bad, I rendezvoused with Mother." Emily Axford

Appearance[]

Ylfa is an awkward preteen with unkempt pigtails, which Timothy braided for her. She wears men's hunting boots, has dirt crusted under her nails, and carries a large axe. She has a skinny, wiry physique, but is surprisingly muscular. One of her eyes is large, bloodshot and bulging. She thinks it might be pinkeye, and it definitely has nothing to do with exertion. Despite it being "her look", Ylfa doesn't wear a red bonnet anymore due to Timothy's trauma around the Gander. Sometimes her hands can become large, hairy, and clawed, and she can grow in size when incredibly angry.

Personality[]

Ylfa is a total grandma girl, having picked up most of her hobbies (such as playing Bridge and Gin Rummy) from her own grandmother. She really likes having guidance from authority figures.

Background[]

When Ylfa was young, Timothy, or "Mother", as Ylfa knew him, read stories to her and other local kids in their shared hometown of Pottingham.

A few years later, Ylfa strayed from the path on her way to visit her grandmother, despite her mom warning her against this (as she believed this to be solely a time-saving thing, and not a warning against danger). Something terrible happened, resulting in the death of her grandma, and she returned home confused and distraught.

When Ylfa approached her home, her mother accused her of being a wolf. Ylfa denied it, and begged to be let in, saying that she was afraid and she was sorry she disobeyed her mother, but her mother was sure that she was dead, and that the wolf was just an expert at pretending to be other people. Ylfa continued to beg, telling her that she wasn't sure what she'd do to try to get inside. She could hear her mother talking about calling "The Woodsman", and Ylfa angrily responded that the Woodsman never comes.

Ylfa's mother then pretended to let her in, but had set up a trap which fired a silver dagger into her arm (originally aiming for her throat or her heart), while her family attempted to run out the back. Before they managed to, Ylfa became incredibly angry at the deception, growing in size, flipping their table, and demanding to know why, if they thought she was dead, she had never received a funeral or a tombstone. She then heard a voice from the forest telling her to breathe, causing her to accidentally blow her family away into the sky. The voice spoke to her again, and she asked it what it had done to her.

After "things went bad," Ylfa reunited with Timothy for protection.

Relationships[]

Grandma Snorgelsson[]

When her Grandma was still alive, Ylfa was a total grandma girl, and her Grandma used to braid her hair with the thickest, tightest braids, which Timothy remarks could be used as rope. Ylfa claimed that the braids were so tight that if she wanted to undo them, she had to cut them off. Ylfa and her Grandma used to play Bridge and Gin Rummy all the time. Grandma Snorgelsson also made Ylfa's special red cloak which Ylfa accidently tears preparing to enter her home.

Mother Snorgelsson[]

Ylfa's mother used to tell her that she had to make more age appropriate friends, and also to not stray from the path while visiting her grandmother. Ylfa disobeyed this rule, causing something bad to happen to her to make her mom believe that she was dead. When she came back, her mother refused to let her in, and then pretended to, if only to set a trap to try and kill the monster which she believed was wearing Ylfa's skin. Failing to understand her mother's fear, Ylfa became angry, and therefore violent, before accidentally blowing her mom and her siblings away into the sky, killing all of them, much to her horror.

Mother Timothy Goose[]

When Ylfa was young, Timothy read stories to her and other local kids in their shared hometown of Pottingham. After "things went bad", Ylfa reunited with Timothy for protection, although sometimes Ylfa protects him more than the other way around. They have done pushup contests before, and Ylfa won, but Timothy lied about how many he did. Timothy is constantly reminding her to drink more water, to the point that she feels waterlogged.

Due to trauma associated with the Gander, Timothy had to ask Ylfa to stop wearing her red bonnet, which he felt incredibly guilty for because he never wanted to police children's clothes. Ylfa seemed more annoyed at the Gander than at Timothy for this, accusing it of stealing her "look".

Pinocchio[]

When Ylfa first meets Pinocchio, she tries to talk to him because she sees that he is also a child, and her mother once told her she needs to make more age appropriate friends. However, she later begins to suspect that he's not a real child, as he didn't recognise either Bridge or Gin Rummy when she mentioned them to him; two games she used to play with her grandmother, which clearly had more to do with Ylfa being a child than her Grandma being a Grandma. When Pinocchio tries to enter Bandlebridge's wagon after the "prince of Shoeberg" incident, Ylfa and Timothy have to pull him away. After the events of the campaign, Ylfa and Pinocchio kiss when they are both 21 years old. Her nickname for him is "nocchi".

Princess Rosamund du Prix[]

When they first meet, Rosamund puts her hand out to be kissed, and Ylfa leaves her lips there too long because she isn't sure how to do it properly.

The Woodsman[]

Ylfa seemingly had some level of belief that the Woodsman would intervene during the events that followed her straying from the path. The Woodsman does not come to intervene. Ylfa tries to dismiss her mother's notion that the Woodsman would protect the family from Ylfa saying "The Woodsman doesn't come. Don't count on the fucking Woodsman."

The Story of Little Red Riding Hood (Reclaimed)[]

"I think that Ylfa, the moral of her story was to obey authority figures, and I think, with her freedom, in classic teen fashion, she's gonna whiplash in the other direction entirely. And I think that when she redoes her story, she is a total little rebel. I think she's straying all the time. I think that she strays so deep into the woods that she meets the Baba Yaga, and they get into shit together." ― Emily Axford

Ylfa stays true to all the things she loves about "grandma culture," so she still loves gin rummy and cursing. However she no longer feels she needs to listen to authority, and realizes that doing so was standing in her way of making other friends as she worried about what the people in charge would think. So she makes more friends, and, in her journel, a lot of space is taken up by the word "Nocchi" surrounded by hearts: her pet name for her perfect boyfriend.

Timothy also keeps in contact with Ylfa, and the first time he finds the girl playing cards with the Baba Yaga, he also compliments her bright orange hat, thinking that the fairy, Nara, is also present. Turns out the hat is just sitting on a mannequin.

Pinocchio has also spent a lot of time hanging out with Ylfa playing gin rummy. Years later when Pinocchio is no longer a puppet and they're both twenty-one, over some small talk, Ylfa leans in to kiss the man. As she does so, she sees out the window the Big Bad Wolf. He gives her a big thumbs up, puts on the orange top hat, and, with a bag over his shoulder, walks off into the sunset.

Trivia[]

  • Ylfa is a shifter reskin, and, therefore, has shifter stats.
  • In the first Adventuring Party episode for Neverafter, Emily Axford says she was inspired to have her character be a version of Little Red Riding Hood since she played the character in a high school production of Into The Woods, a Stephen Sondheim musical which retells classic fairy tales with more adult themes.
  • "Ylfa" is a variation of "Ylva" the female form of "Ulf", a Norse name meaning wolf. Snorgel somewhat sounds like snorkle, which is a breathing apparatus. The "son" part could charitably be read as child if you stretch it, Which means Ylfa Snorgelsson might translate to "wolf child with a breathing problem". "Snorgelsson" also might be a corruption of "Snorri Sturulson", the Icelandic mythogrpher.
  • Little Red Riding Hood has a ATU classification of 333.
  • Her minis were sold as part of the Dimension 20 Neverafter Auction for $1,961 ("Once"), $3,003 ("Twice"), and $2501 ("Thrice").
  • During the first Time Quangle live show, it is revealed that Ylfa is a part of the fable The Boy Who Cried Wolf. She admits that she runs around the town wild shaped into wolf form, and transforms back into Ylfa every time the boy shouts for help.
